i recently reinstalled cs4, and everything else on my laptop… it’s taken me a little while to get everything back to how i liked it, little things.

when i go to copy and paste a clip, video or audio, typically i would copy>highlight track>paste…viola, everything is fine.

now whenever i copy a clip, the track selection is irrelevant. the clip is pasted on the same track number as the one copied. is there a simple way to fix this? if i want to copy and paste a clip from V2 to V3, i can no longer do that. what am i missing? it’s gotta be something simple..

Pasting occurs in the selected track at the CTI…works fine for me, copying from V1 pasting to V2.

The only track selected will be the track the paste will occur.

Say you have 5 tracks. If you copy from track 2 and have 3 4 5 selected the paste will occur on track 3 because it’s the bottom selected track.

Holding shift while you select a track will select all or deselect all depending on the tracks having a selecton or not will speed up the select only a track workflow.

I understand how it’s supposed to work, which is why I’m having issues… let me try to say it again:

Pretend I have 5 video tracks. I want to copy a lower third graphic from V2 to V5. If I select V5 and paste, the graphic is pasted wherever the timeline marker is, but it remains on V2.

I’ll take this a step further even…. if I deselect all tracks, none are lit up, it stil pastes to V2. If I copy from another project that has, god forbid, 11 tracks, and my current sequence has 2 tracks, it will add additional tracks so it can paste on the 11th track.

Selection is irrelevant. Is there a setting in preferences that I’m overlooking? Should I post screenshots?

If there are no tracks selected then it will
paste where it was copied from.

If all that I have described is not getting the paste result then try resetting your preferences by holding down shift while you launch ppro. You should see all the plugins load very slowly. Release the shift key when u reach the new open exit window.

Jon, thanks for getting back to me again. I tried your suggestion to no avail. Here’s a screenshot so you can see what I’m looking at:

    copy:

note the track selected for the paste… I then “cntl-V” and this is what happens:

No clue, NO CLUE what’s happening!!! Maybe I should reinstall the program? I mean, it’s not a HUGE deal, but it’s somehow really frustrating!

    Hi Mike,

I had the same problem when I started using cs4 (it was installed on a machine that had had cs3 which was uninstalled then cs4 installed in its place). If this sounds like your system…

The only solution I could find was to eventually wipe the system drive and reinstall cs4. After that even the legacy projects allowed the cutting and pasting to selected tracks.

Before the nuclear option however, have you updated premiere to the most current version?

It’s been a while and maybe 2 1/2 versions later, but I think in 2010 my issue ended up being solved by reinstalling the program. There was an update that I was unable to install after repeated attempts, but uninstalling and reinstalling the program eventually allowed me to access and install the update.

Not sure what version of premiere you’re using, but try and make sure you’re working on the latest update for your version.
