April 27, 2017 at 7:33 pm in reply to: Thunderbolt on a PC?

Thank you for this feedback! I’m up a creek with an older paddle it seems. Unfortunately I have a dual Xeon 3.6 machine that is loaded with PCI-Express slots but not Thunderbolt as an option. The cost that I have in this workstation would be prohibitted because I would have to brick the CPU’s ($800 each), and the Mobo.

  • Bob,

I really appreciate you weighing in! I am going to give it a shot PC prices being what they are and will get back to ya’ll.

  • Thanks for the feedback.

We work on DVCPro and PRO Res HD or lower bandwidth assets…the needs we have are covered by Bob’s system with some overhead but I am not sure if it is OS agnostic and if I can use a Windows server rather than a Mac…

Sorry such lame questions but as I don’t have Mac systems it is a big concern given that all I see so far is people doing this sort of system on a Mac.

The shared environmental variables you mentioned are pretty basic and those rules apply to people working on their local disk but it is good advice none the less.

Yep nice work, you are going to fall over when you see Legend of Aahhh’s…if you look around (Mountain Gazette, Ski Press, Skiing, Powder, ETC) you will see a slow resurgence of Stumpy!

He has come full circle…this is his swan song and the whole industry is going to have to take notice…having said that if I had not worked this out I would be out the back faster than a slalom racer hooking his tip on a gate!!!

As for the other DVCPro solution DVCPro HD works quite well in PPro CS3 and so does DVCPro50 (for example I shoot with a couple HVX’s and MXF DVCPro 50 and DVCPro HD come in fine with no rendering at all), just not DVCPro 50 that has been wrapped into a .mov by quicktime by FCPro…it shows an all white frame with full audio.

I can not even begin to tell you how important the Cow is.

First off these are films of a really well known ski film maker that coined the word ‘extreme’…and I can tell you that he doesn’t give two cents that I am on a PC…getting the videos for transcoding was a big enough deal becauseit is pulling him off of his new film Legend of Aahhh’s…if I were to have to go back to him and say “can we transcode these on your suite to Animation”, his responce would be “thanks we’ll find someone else”…

Long story short I bought DV Raylight Encoded Pro and it worked like a charm!!!

Previous to the native DVCPro HD in Premier Pro I had used DV Raylight and it also worked quite well!!!

Love it, so happy, and getting the work done!

    Well that is so cool.

I had used Raylight prior to the native DVCPro in Premier and it worked out quite well. I stopped using afterwards, but there is alot to know about the DV Film products and I have to admit I never quite wrapped my brain around the product and it’s range.

December 19, 2008 at 9:04 pm in reply to: DVCPro 50 in QT on PC…no codec

So the ingest was Beta Deck via Kona 3 to FCP…which created a single .mov

My question is if Kona created the capture as a .mov using the DVCPro 50 codec why can’t I either change the file type or why won’t my Premier Pro CS3 recognize the video as DVCPro 50 is included with the software codec pack…via Main Concepts.

So Premier Pro supports QT and DVCPro 50 but no the combination of the two?

October 11, 2008 at 4:30 pm in reply to: CMS HVX – MXF associated file deleting

I don’t think that the Panasonci CMS will do what I want anyways. I read through the documentation and while it is very cool what I need is to be able to:

Review a clip in WMP or whatever and then after realizing that there is nothing on this clip worth keeping. I would like to delete the clip and all associated files IE:

    Audio
    Clip
    Proxy
    Icon
    Video
    Voice

This will save me huge amounts of storage and prevent me from reviewing and importing crap into my projects!

Thank you so much in advanced to any one who has an idea about this.

September 17, 2008 at 9:37 pm in reply to: One last mess to understand today…DV Capture

I was shooting with a Canon GL2 at the time and have about 40 tapes to capture for archival, which I will very likily use in the future.

In the GL2 I can shoot in progressive mode?

I have often seen captures that looked really aliased when playing it back in either PPRo, Quicktime, and WMP…I always thought this was due to the whole progressive thing.

Not sure where to turn now, as I agree with what you have said, but I still end up with really aliased edges in some footage and I have a stong feeling this is due to whether the footage was shot as 29.97 or 30p on my Canon GL2.

September 17, 2008 at 7:28 pm in reply to: A little Help…render is missing part of the right frame

I am on PC…I was just asking what you meant by it will show through a Kona or Blackmagic card…

So here is the issue with more detail and accuracy…

In my standard Premier Pro 720 DVCPro HD timeline when I use a clip and apply Color Finesse on a either a non native (to the timeline) format, or @$pn footage that wa either undercranked or overcranked it is only rendering the 720×960 portion of the frame and ignores the rest…

I have talked with Color Finesse and they are looking into it and here are some links for comparison:

http://www.gravnetic.com/Jimmys.php – with color finesse on clips
http://www.gravnetic.com/Jimmysallbetter.php – color finesse turned off, still uploading here so check back if the page is not found.
