That’s good to know, that color trace still works, Rohit, but if that’s the case, can the timeline be then re-sorted by the TC?

I could be mistaken, but I think he also is asking, that the material’s name and TC of the original sources is preserved as well. Resolve could take those names and TC from the EDL and assign that info to the newly split media. This way, for example, with source TC assigned, one would still be able to do a timeline sort by TC. And color auto-trace would still would work.
Well, at least that’s how FilmMaster does it:-)

  • No, not all computer monitors are 8 bit. If you’re on Mac, it’s mostly true, but if you’re using display port you can get 10 bit quality.

After more than a year of users asking for, Resolve still hasn’t implemented Log style grading controls. It doesn’t mean, that you can’t grade Log material with traditional telecine controls, nevertheless it would’ve gone a long way toward making Log environment complete. Personally, I too haven’t found, that working in video gamma for video deliverables to be detrimental to the quality of the finish.

I prefer MC Color over Wave from purely built quality and feel. Unfortunately, it seems, that BM spent even less time on doing a layout on MC Color, than Wave. Said that, I don’t see requested changes happening any time soon, so I just use Shuttle Pro for extra functions, that difficult or impossible on MC Color, like next/previous event, go to first/ last frame of the event, adding various nodes, dynamic marks etc.

  • I use cache render with full debayer quality for real time EVERYTHING, including NR and unlimited nodes. No RR needed. What missing is the ability of Resolve to “remember” cached files. Every time you restart the session, your cache is gone and computer has to rerender it all, even, that that rendered file is still there. Also, strange one, if you just bypass all grades, upon enable, computer has to rerender it again, why?
I would like to see the cacheing scheme, similar to Nucoda or, now, Baselight. Material get’s debayered and NR to a separate cache file and actual grading is done from that (10 or 16 bit selectable DPX). This way you can just conform the session, apply the NR and have coffee, while system does it’s thing. From then on it’s smooth sailing, no debayer. If you need to change red setting, computer just re-renders those frames. Everything real time, no sweat…

  • Linux version already works with Cinespace, or at least it did a short while ago…

FilmMaster works with OFX version of Sapphire with no issues whatsoever. And so is Scratch, to a certain extent…
On the Resolve NR front, it worth mentioning, that traditional NR is done by analyzing and estimation motion of the image and based on that software decides what is noise and what is not. I have no idea, if Resolve uses this technique, nevertheless, real time NR is extremely difficult task, requiring massive amounts of rendering power. So, it seems to me, is trying to balance quality vs. speed. Neat Video or something similar, may provide for cleaner result, but none of them do it in real time. So, pick your poison, speed or quality. Said that, I was able to achieve reasonably good results with Resolve, provided, I only used it in the areas needed.

I feel the sentiment, but I had been following his web site for a while. He had been running the same offer of discounted rates to indy filmmakers, blah, blah, blah for at least two years on reduser. Every two months or so, he would run the same advert. His web site and his work hasn’t changed at all in last two years. He hasn’t contributed to Reduser or to Creative Cow at all. I had actually caught him cheating on his before and after looks a while ago. Well, based on all that does it mean, that he doesn’t deserve a living as a colorist? Of coarse not. My point is anyone wanting to do so needs to improve his skills, advertise, network etc. Unfortunately, from what I saw, he didn’t do any of that. He just though, that clients will come to him, because he was cheaper. Wrong! Sooner or later being the cheapest always leads to the exact end we just had witnessed…

As I said, you were arguing against any need for change in the interface and championing a present state. See for yourself. Yes, the Baselight statement is there too…

Of coarse, it would be silly of me to take a personal credit for introduction of color wheel. See, the idea of these conversations, is to convey my hopes and desires to the powers in charge and hope I can make a compelling enough case for a need to change. All I’m saying is one my ideas, so far, were deemed good enough to be on the side of change and yours weren’t…
You keep bringing up the point, that Resolve was designed to work mostly with the DV panel and that is true. What is also true is the overwhelming majority users of Resolve and participants of this blog have no intention to purchase $30k panel, ever. So, this argument, that somehow it’s fault of the users, that do not have a full featured panel is disingenuous. It’s a fact, that right now, those users have to resort to using various hardware add ons (G13, Shuttle Pro, etc), in addition to Wave and MC Color panels, just to be able to grade.
