Is the preview window in the Davinci resolve software remotely good enough to grade RGB imagery for internet delivery?

To put it another way, if I have computer generated material (3D, After Effects motion graphics, etc.) can I just grade using the software preview window?

So far, the only obvious downside is that the preview monitor has significant Banding issues with gradients (the raw material viewed in other applications does not have banding, so I blame DaVinci 😉

    Thanks

Consider that all computer displays are 8bit which is what causes the banding to begin with. I would say no to grading on the computer display but your mileage may vary….

    Thanks for the reply.

Would you happen to know why the banding appears in the Davinci preview window, and not other software, like After Effects for example?

Have you experienced similar? I’m wondering if the preview image is lower quality so that frames per second/realtime is higher?

    Thats an interesting topic.
Do you have a sample we can compare in Resolve and AE ?
That would be really interesting to find out.
I am using the Apple cinema display and did not see any banding that was not already in the compression so far

No, not all computer monitors are 8 bit. If you’re on Mac, it’s mostly true, but if you’re using display port you can get 10 bit quality.

When I get back to the workstation I will try to mock something up that I can pass along. Also note, we are working with EXR sequences. I’ll see if I can make a gradient test chart of some sort.

The display port hardware is theoretically capable of 10bit but the software (i.e. Mac OSX) only displays 8bit color. Apple has not implemented 10bit in the OS and have a history of lagging very far behind other OS’s support of GPU tech..

Here is a long thread on the Adobe Photoshop forum complaining about Apple’s lack of support for 10bit monitoring.
