The interface comment hits the nail on the head. It is easier and faster than Final Cut.
I have been using Media100i for the last ten years and preferred even that to Final Cut though it fell behind in what you accomplish with it.

So the fact that over the last year, Media 100 has caught up technologically is really great news and I am looking forward to updating to HD in the next month or so. And the new boards being compatible with FCP is an added bonus.

What should should you look at to see if your Raid can keep up? So for example if I’m using a Firewire 400/800 or a CalDigit Raid or what have you – which benchmark does one check out to see if they will work well together. I know you want your devices to have similar speeds for the to work well together. Is it the processor speed? The data transmission rate?

Really, as long as your peripherals (e.g. RAID) can keep up, additional CPU power enables more effects. E.g. you can get realtime transitions, ColorFX and Alpha channels on HD Uncompressed footage on a QuadG5, which you cannot on a DualG5. So expect to see even more realitme on an 8Core Intel system.

are people having luck with the caldigit drives doing uncompressed hd? and what sort of hd are people pulling off using just firewire 800 drives (if any?)? sounds like this could be answered in the next compat. periph. guide as well…

So, if you are saying that a Firewire 800 can handle DVCPRO HD… then can you input DVCPRO HD
straight into Media 100 Producer through a firewire cable? I am too thinking of a slower route of
upgrading and it would be great if Producer could be the solution for now … and HDe somewhere down
the road.

Are you connected via a S-Video cable by chance? Sometimes a broken/failing S-Video cable will cause
the image to only appear in Black and White.

If you are connected via a component switcher etc I would also check your cables as well.

I have had good results with Sorenson 3. Though it depends a little bit on the resolution your client
requires. Oftentimes I will post a 320×240 file with the bitrate at around 1200kbs. It is not super high res
but good enough for approvals and makes a reasonable file size. Or a 640×480 file as well with a reasonable bitrate. Also I suggest compressing the audio as well as that will reduce your file size. I use the IMA 4.1 one myself. Though once again it all comes down to the quality that is necessary to post…

As for the freezing — I have run into that as well. My guess is it is a memory issue (ram). It seems to happen
when you are working with a file of any length. What I have done is exported a self contained file from MEdia 100 and then opened that self contained file inside quicktime pro which has basically the same compression options as inside Media 100. And exported it from there — and it has never frozen.
