Thanks Brian. I tried this with a test file of 5000 points copied from the original text file and pasted into a new file, and it worked. But I couldn’t find any way to connect all the points automatically to make an object. I tried the file with over a million points, and after 15 minutes the Mac beachball was still spinning, and Cinema was “not responding,” according to the message I got when I decided to force quit. If I have to connect them all by hand anyway, it’s simply not going to happen, unless someone knows of a way to automatically skin the points to make polygons.

Thanks for your help and input.

Thanks, Brian. I do have MoGraph, so I’ll give that a try.

Is there a way to turn a sub-polygon displaced object into geometry? I tried Current state to object, and got a cube instead of an object that looked like the displaced object render. I’d like to bring it into BodyPaint and paint on the geometry, but I can’t see it. Alternatively, is there a way to see the displaced geometry in BodyPaint (I’m new to BodyPaint, so I don’t really know what I’m doing there yet)?

    thanks,

    Thanks, Brian, I’ll give sub-poly a try.

After trying several different objects (cube, plane) I’ve found that the limit for segments seems to be 1000 no matter what. I wish there was a higher limit. I tried displacement on a plane, but can’t get past the 1000 segment limit to get better detail. Maybe I’ll contact Maxon and see what they say.

You need a black and white map of the world, at 2:1 aspect ratio, where the land is white and the water is black. Put that onto a relief object, subdivide it quite a bit, and check the Spherical box. You can adjust the height of the land to get the amount of relief you want. Then put a shiny metal texture on it (or whatever texture you want to use).

After you’ve set your render settings, with the format for the render, and a place for it to be saved, press the Render in Picture Viewer button.

Thanks, Brian, setting the geometry to All did the trick. I knew it had to be something simple (and logical) like that, but the tutorial didn’t specify it. It works great. Thanks for your help.

Randy, thanks for the link to the tutorial. I’ll check it out.

Do you mean a ParticleGeometry object? Yes. The particles (spheres) render fine, but the fragments don’t. I’ve posted the file at:

    ftp://ftp.whoi.edu/pub/graphics/jcook

if you want to take a look at it. It’s calledl TPfragments.c4d. Bear in mind this is just a learning exercise, but it would be nice to get it to work.

Excellent! Thanks, Nolan. I couldn’t find that in the manual somehow.
