    you should be able to get something like this by creating a sphere and wrapping an earth-outline texture around it and within the texture use the bump channel set to the earth-outline image to created the continental extruded look.

    I’m sure theres other ways about it, but this might give you what you’re going for with the least amount of geometry and render time.

    that works to some extent but it does not give me the desired depth to create the shadow and contrast I want i want to be able to take the world texture and extrude the island to they sit above the sphere

    You need a black and white map of the world, at 2:1 aspect ratio, where the land is white and the water is black. Put that onto a relief object, subdivide it quite a bit, and check the Spherical box. You can adjust the height of the land to get the amount of relief you want. Then put a shiny metal texture on it (or whatever texture you want to use).

    yes thats helped a lot Jack thank you I am getting closer defo although I have forund another link and if you click to view the wireframe thumb and view the image the island are extruded with sharp edges
