December 30, 2012 at 9:11 am in reply to: Need advice to get a mic for recording discoursesOk, thanks for the clarification.
In that case, could it be possible to use an adapter to have two separate lav mics?
Another option is to order a longer cord, I think Sound Professionals can do that.
H1 provides plug-in power, but I don’t know how much will it be.
Is there a need to get a small pre-amp for the mic or mics?
Sound Professionals site have these (although it’s down at the moment).
Any recommendation for a good lav?

Now I understand. So then I will go with the lav mics and have to hang it on the speaker anyway.
By a discourse I meant a speaker sitting behind the table and speaking, audience and space vary a lot, all kinds of environments will be taken into consideration. The speaker travels a lot and speaks in different places, outdoor and indoor.
One more question. If I hang the lav on a standard microphone stand close to the big mic for the public, will there be any interference problems?
And then I have to choose a good lav mike. Should I get a mic with low sensitivity? I don’t want to record much of the surroundings and the volume of the record is not a problem, I will go through it and add levels etc. with Adobe Audition. I just want to have a nice, clean and natural voice recording.
One more thing I’m taking into consideration is that sometimes the speaker has a translator and I also want to record him. So I was thinking of binaural mics since there’s two of them in one and I can use one for the translator. Later on I can mix the recording together or keep two separate tracks, whatever is needed. Is that a good way to go?
If yes, then I’m thinking of these Audio Professionals lav mics. Is that a good choice?
Or if that is not a good choice, is there anything you can recommend?

Thank you Bill for your advice!
I checked out those cameras and Sony NX30 stabilization: impressive! Also it’s really small size. Panasonic is yet to come out, I have to check out all the specs, but looks like it will be a choice between XA10 and NX30. They’re both smaller size, have removable hood and handle.
There’s not good enough reviews yet on Panasonic and it’s stabilization is also not clearly tested, although something is available here:
https://www.dvinfo.net/forum/panasonic-avccam-camcorders/510881-first-look-panasonic-ag-ac90-dv-expo.htmlIt seems that Sony does a better job on stabilizing the movements. Are they using same technology or not?
I wonder how fragile Sony’s new optics are? They’re all the time moving and I will be traveling a lot, lot’s of movement and shaking. I hope it’s sturdy enough to withstand that. In that sense Canon seems a better choice, but the stabilization is definitely a tempting feature.
I’ll get into comparing other specs tomorrow.

LTO-5 is big enough to consider using tapes, but since the price is still a little too high for me at the moment, I’m better off getting some SATA drives for now and looking into LTO realm again after 2-3 years when the price has dropped.
One question. The vendors offer 2:1 average compression. How much in practice can audio/video data be compressed? How much can actually fit onto a LTO-5 tape?

Thank You John, it worked out great!
I tried the trial version and the results are visibly better than simply rendering to HD resolution. And thanks for the tutorial, wouldn’t be able to figure out without that.

Thank you Bob, that’s the confirmation I needed.

Thank you very much for the information, I’ll go with the canon.

Thanks a lot Steve!
That solved it, ticked the ‘no lag mode’ and everything is ok.
Is that the only situation it’s useful or should I just keep it on all the time?

You made me look into it more deeply and Vegas is not at fault, it’s the Neat Video plug-in what creates the artifacts. It’s not so bad (but still unusable) when added to the lower layer, but when I add it to upper layer, then it’s really bad.
I guess I can prerender those parts with CC into Avi clips and add them to the project again. Waste of time, energy and quality.

Hi Sareesh!
Thank you for a quick response and professional advice. I considered all the points you made and checked out the Canon XA10 camera. Looks like it’s really the one that suits the best. It’s really small size, portable and has I can use external shotgun mics for high quality sound and that is important, especially when filming a speaker from behind the audience.
I’m not sure why DSLR is not a good option, because it’s more fragile and probably has a low battery life, and no XLR support?
One thing about the ND filter. Will it take down the sharpness? Although in daylight in India it’s pretty bright and the filter should balance it out well.
Any other filters to consider?
Any other cameras to choose from?
Thank you again for the advice, I’m almost sure to get that Canon.
