  • Upscaling SD to HD – is that required?

    Hi!

I’m editing old SD material and I’m wondering what’t the best output format for them? Most of it will be viewed on computer screens, well, maybe someone has a HD TV. In any case, I would like it to be compatible with the latest technology for avoiding any possible problems in the future. These are mostly mpeg-2 files, 4:3. I will make them widescreen.

Does upscaling improve the quality? What’s the best settings to use in Vegas Pro 11?

    Thank you!

Boris Continuum Complete has BCC UpRez that will do a nice job of upscaling your SD to HD. You can purchase it alone as a Continuum Unit and you can download a trial to see if you like the results.

If you just want to use Vegas, I would create a project at the resolution you want to deliver at and use the sharpening filter on the track that has SD content. I won’t look as good UpRez but it might be OK.

Here is my tutorial from Boris TV on how UpRez works:

Thank You John, it worked out great!

I tried the trial version and the results are visibly better than simply rendering to HD resolution. And thanks for the tutorial, wouldn’t be able to figure out without that.
