[Dan Brockett] “but the future is pointing toward not needing fast and powerful computers and fast and powerful is a relative thing.”

What area of the industry do you work in? You sound like you haven’t had any experience with VFX. Editing and shooting is one thing, but a huge portion of TV shows(including reality), commercials, and films have some sort of digital cosmetics, roto work, or compositing. Even shows like The Office employ a team of visual effects artists. You cannot do this kind of work on a slow computer with a tiny screen. I can’t wait for the day when I can composite with my 30″ OLED display and a supercomputer the size of a potato.

[Dan Brockett] “YouTube and Vimeo mean that people don’t need to see RED 4k footage on a 107″ plasma for it to be acceptable to them anymore.”

You’re assuming that Youtube, Vimeo, and the internet aren’t going to increase in quality and speed. If you’ve been paying attention, Youtube videos even a couple years ago don’t look nearly as good as the one’s today because of better compression algorithms and faster computing. If anything, as people get used to higher quality video, content creators aren’t going to be able to get away with shooting something on a flip HD.

A firewire 800 drive with the right sequence settings is more than enough for ProRes and XDCAM. I even did a test a few months ago with a USB 2.0 drive to see if I could edit 1920×1080 ProRes and XDCAM and it worked fine on my dual Quad. I had the sequence set to Unlimited RT, Dynamic Video Quality, Full Frame Rate, and I very rarely dropped frames. If you want to speed things up when navigating through the timeline, turn off the thumbnails for the video tracks and turn off the audio waveforms.

eSATA is great, but if you’re not cutting multicam or stacking clips on top of each other, it’s not necessary.

What model do you have? There’s multiple 2010 Pro Plasmas.

From what I’ve read, the G25 and G20 Viera’s are actually better than the Pro Plasma’s after calibration. Apparently the Pro Plasmas don’t even have 3D color management on top of having inferior black levels. I think Panasonic’s focus is more on their consumer displays, especially considering they have the pioneer guys working on the 2011 Viera’s.

Exactly. The comments section in the article says it all. If more people don’t figure this out I think it will definitely hurt Resolve’s sales since there are still so many of us using 2008 Mac Pros.

The GT120 will work with older MacPro’s, Apple just doesn’t want you to know that. Google it.

I’m taking a Resolve class right now. Have you ever seen the modern Resolve interface in action? Judging by how many people couldn’t handle Color’s interface and learning curve, I don’t think we’re going to see “everyone” doing it themselves any time soon. Just reading the manual on the BM site makes this pretty clear.

It’s not out for OSX yet. You’d have to contact the Blackmagic guys and find out if they’ve tried it.
