  • Speaker Audio Level Control?

Posted by Liam Lawyer on June 14, 2010 at 7:32 pm

OK so this is a side-topic question:

I am looking for a solution for controlling audio levels on speakers hooked to an LHi FCP system without an audio board. We have KRKs with volume on the back. We don’t need a full audio board taking up desktop space just to achieve this so is there any small level controller that anyone knows of?

Or is there some way to have the computer’s volume do this? Can’t find it, if so…

    Thanks!

The Mackie Big Knob should work for you.

While the Big Knob is the answer almost everyone will give you to this question, it may be over the top for your uses. If you have only one source and only one monitoring system, you can pick up a TC Electronics Level Pilot for a quarter of the price.

Nothing exciting, it’s basically just a volume knob for whatever you plug it in-line to. It looks sleek and works as advertised.

A Mackie 802-VLZ3 is half the cost of the Big Knob and vastly more versatile. It has the smallest footprint of the Mackie mixers, at only 10.5 x 9 inches.

I generally have everything set up at volume I like to work, but I also keep the audio tool open at all times, so I can simply use the master fader to control monitor volume in a pinch. Just need to remember to set it back to zero before outputting to tape or digital. It will affect the levels of either.

I have my audio going into a Denon amp which has a volume control.
