I think I understand. There are only 4 possible images that will display?
I’d put those four images (one after the other) in a pre-comp. Then build the grid out of those pre-comps, offsetting their start times so they switch at different intervals.
Otherwise, using Hold* keyframes can shift position instantly with no inbetweening.
*right-click on your keyframe and choose Toggle Hold Keyframe.

Use the pen tool to draw the line on a Solid. Apply the Effect > Generate > Stroke.
You should animate the End property. Frame one of End should be at 0 and frame last should be at 100. -
I think you might have to keyframe the crack by hand. Then, the frame before the halves move apart, switch the halves to individual layers. Then it’s all a matter of shatter from there.

Or you can simply crank up the Mask Expansion (MM) and set the masked solid as a Track Matte (F4). If the mask expansion makes the mask too big, double click the mask and use the bounding box to resize.

Yeah, sounds like you’re looking/RAM previewing a different view than you are sending to render. Sounds like you also just learned a pretty valuable lesson, yesno?

Let this be a lesson to you. A typical AE file usually doesn’t exceed a few MB. Save a revision every morning when you open the project. If you really got effed back there, you would have lost a lot of work.
