The M5 cannot be used with the D55. They are not compatible. The DXF51 can be used with the D50.

Yes, the EX codecs are only available in FAT mode. There’s a 35 Mb XDCAM codec available in UDF mode but it is the legacy XDCAM HD format and is 1440 x 1080.

it’s only in the OTHERS menu with later issue firmware. if you don’t see it there you need to enable the extended maintenance menus. press MENU, the menu wheel and the Cancel button simultaneously. this opens the regular menu with a few added categories. scroll down to IF (‘Information’) and you’ll find VERSION info there.

the EX cameras go up to 60 fps @ 720 and 30 fps @ 1080. If you use a Nano you can record in the native XDCAM EX codec at data rates beyond what can be recorded on the camera. Make sure you set the nano up correctly as you can set it for native 60 or for 24 over 60 with 2:3 pulldown removal. It’s the former that you want..

Delete the XDCAM Transfer database folder at User/Library/Application Support/Sony XDCAM Transfer. Then relaunch the app. A new SQL database will be generated when you restart.

You may want to try ClipWrap, which will add an .mov wrapper to the clip without transcoding. (It can also transcode to ProRes but the re-wrap is much faster.)

FCP will take the files via Log and Transfer and transcode to ProRes during import but only if the files are in the original AVCHD directory structure. It will not recognize loose .mts files.

Highlight the clips you want to convert, right click and select Export, then choose the appropriate MXF version. The first option is a re-wrap only and will output files that can be used in most Windows based NLEs as well as Mac-based Media Composer and Premiere. The other options are transcodes and work in demo mode until you buy the Main Concept key. Without a key you can use these but the files will be watermarked. These options are mostly for exporting to XDCAM optical disc machines so it’s unlikely that you’d need to use an option other than the free one if you just need to get the files into an older version of editing software. Most NLEs can now take .mp4s natively (FCP requires a plugin to do this but recent versions of Premiere, Avid, Vegas and Edius all support unconverted .mp4s) so what, if anything, you do in XDCAM Browser will obviously depend on what you use to edit.

We should have an update very soon re XDCAM Browser support (for both Optical XDCAM and EX) under Lion. XDCAM Transfer and the Log and Transfer plugin are EOL and in all probability will not be updated. Stay tuned and thanks for your patience.

If the network drive is mounted and available to the system you can import from it, and others will be able to do the same, but the application utilizes a single-user database so you will not be able to see each other’s changes (subclips and logging info, for example) or otherwise work collaboratively.

If it’s broken, yes. In the course of a normal firmware update, no. The precaution has to do with the software upgrade path from older versions, not the hardware.
