Yes, but the network drive has to be mounted to the system; there’s no built in FTP functionality (as in Flip4Mac) to go and retrieve the clips. Also it’s not recommended that you use network drives for the library folders (cache, database etc).

The ServicesPlus site, where Sony hosts parts and software, is undergoing maintenance for another week or so.

In the meantime we have parked most of the current software and firmware at https://www.sony.com/xdcam-downloads.

The EX1 and EX3 firmware, however, is currently not available for download, even on the updated site. Call the US Tech support office at 800 883 6817 and they will instruct you on getting the camera updated.

The more advanced transcode options in Clip Browser are only available when working with HD files. Best option would probably be a round trip through FCP or Avid (if you’re not talking about too many clips) or else a Transcoding app like Episode.

As I mentioned in my previous post you can use Transfer in standalone mode (the plug-in integration doesn’t currently work in X) to rewrap to .mov, which is the process outlined in the Apple KB article. Will have another update shortly but for the near term at least we will be rewrapping to .mov. XDCAM Transfer is EOL but Browser will be getting some updates for plug-in integration (with X; already works with 7) and and standalone mode (currently not supported at all).

XDCAM Transfer does not work in plugin mode but v 2.12 can be run standalone under Leopard/Snow Leopard. Clip Browser isn’t a Final Cut Pro plugin; v 2.6 remains qualified for Leopard/Snow Leopard with no further development for Lion. Going forward, XDCAM Browser will be qualified for both FCPX and Lion and will replace both XDCAM Transfer and EX Clip Browser.

You should call and send the card in to be looked at and properly recovered. I thought when you said “I don’t feel that I need to send in for recovery because I can access the files” that maybe I was missing something and you were able to access them in some way. If you do a Get Info (Cmd + I) on the card or look at it in Finder does it accurately show remaining capacity? Or does it look blank?

Unless there are wildly different firmware versions on the two cameras it should not make a difference if the card is formatted in one EX and used in another. They all use the same file system and folder structure (with the exception of the PMW-500 which offers the option of UDF/Optical Disc formatting and recording to MXF files). It’s a good practice to format on the device you’re actually using but neglecting to do should not cause a situation like the one you’re experiencing.

if you can access the files and get what you need there’s no reason to send it in. it should be fine after it’s been reformatted.

removing the card should not have worsened the situation but it is impossible to say for sure, as the file system can get damaged in different ways when power is suddenly removed. the presence of those other files with the strange names is something I hadn’t seen before.

the SLV files indicate that the camera knew it was powered off suddenly and that the media files were not closed properly. you mentioned being unable to copy the files– so you have no access to the mp4s through Finder even though the card mounts? if you try to do a manual import using CB, will it allow you to touch these files?

when a ‘Salvage’ needs to be performed it generally can only be performed on the device model that made the recording.

if you can’t access the files (or if you can and find that they’re compromised) call the tech group at 800 883 6817 (US 800#) and they will put you in contact with our media recovery people.

I would also update the U1 firmware and driver, both of which are bundled at the link below. Run the 2.3.2 installer for the driver, then open the U-1 Utility application (located in your /Applications folder) and click on Update Firmware–>Start. The firmware is included with the utility; you do not need to do a second download. When finished the main page of the utility should show driver 2.3.2/firmware 2.45.
