  • Thanks Michael, that was a completely unexpected answer.

I take it that I use the 1080i50 setting for everything and resist the urge to use anything “progressive”?

  • Thanks a lot Jason.

That gives me something reasonably concrete to try out and I actually understood the instructions!

Will compare both methods when I next edit.

    Thanks again.

    Ian.

  • Thanks Jason.

Two questions arise from your (and other people’s comments):-

    1. Being lazy, in the ten minutes of testing I have done so far, I have simply chosen File>Export>QuickTime Movie before authoring. Will I really get a noticeable improvement if I use Compressor instead ?

    2. ProRes sounds interesting but I can find no reference to it in the manuals. In my “FCP Additional Easy Setups” folder there are a number of ProRes ones, but I don’t know where to put them or how to use them. Where can I get information, or is it staring me in the face somewhere amongst those thousands of pages?

  • Thanks for those suggestions Ryan.

Unfortunately it’s not just a cheap method of display I want, it’s also a convenient one.

Playing through a computer is even more fiddly than plugging my camera into a TV and how do I distribute my videos to folk who have no suitable computer ?

Although, we on this forum, want the highest possible quality, 99% of our audiences don’t even notice or care about the things we rave over, whether it’s that ultimate sharpness or special technique. (Sorry, I’m just rambling).

  • Thanks Walter, as you guessed I am a pure amateur.

If I were a professional I wouldn’t think twice about parting with the cash.

Recently I had an assignment and produced 8 DVD copies that would have been worth at least £1,000 of anyone’s money.

What was my reward …………… a tin of Roses chocolates, and an extra shine to my halo.

  • Hi Walter, I suppose it all depends on your definition of “exorbitant”.

I am in the UK and the current prices for a Blu-ray DVD Burner are around £600 as compared with £60 for a standard DVD burner.

Discs are around £10 each. When I can burn a normal DVD for under 20 pence, I think you will realise why I consider the Blu-ray prices exorbitant !

Burners 10 times the price and discs 50 times!

In a couple of years or so, those prices will have dropped to around £100 and £1 respectively and I will then consider them to be reasonable.

I think you may have slightly misunderstood my intentions. There is no way I would keep the HDV material stored on my HDs when I have it on the original tape.

I will keep the original tape and then, if necessary, I can re-edit it at a later date and burn to Blu-ray.

  • Thanks Ed – I take it that your suggestion would be to follow my option 1 ?

I will also follow your other suggestion and do a search ! It’s strange, but when I get a problem I sometimes wrongly assume that I am the first one to experience it !

  • Thanks David, I will try that.

QT can be updated to 7.5, however, there are over a dozen other items, apparently nothing to do with the OS and belonging to apps I do not use but amounting to hundreds of megabytes.

Obviously I don’t want to update them especially as I have a very slow broadband connection and also a monthly limit.

I will try QT and if that doesn’t cure it I will consider going from OSX 10.5.2 to 10.5.3.

    Thanks again.

    Ian.

OKOKOK – Be aware that normally you cannot move back, should you want to.

    Richard – re. moving back.

Last week I had a project in FCE 3.0 which I wanted to also have in FCP 5.1 (don’t ask why!).

Because I still wanted it to be accessible in FCE, I copied the project file and converted one of them to FCP.

It seemed to work OK and I can now continue with the project in either application – or both simultaneously if I wish to demonstrate my ambidexterity!

Was I just lucky or is this indeed a safe way to ensure that I don’t lose the ability to continue the project in its original application ?

PHYSICALLY you can load it onto thousands of computers if you want, but if you wish to keep within the rules of the EULA you have to do what Steven said.

Though how anyone can tell whether you are using them simultaneously (rather hard with just one user unless you are ambidextrous ) or consecutively, I don’t know.
