I have been working on FCP 4.5 and acquired FCP 5.1, which I want to upgrade to. Will I be able to open my old FCP files that I edited in 4.5? I have new files that I am working with that have been captured on to FCP 5.1 so I know I need it for those, but are there any tricks or loopholes I should know about?

Old can move forward, but render files go offline

OKOKOK – Be aware that normally you cannot move back, should you want to.

    Richard – re. moving back.

Last week I had a project in FCE 3.0 which I wanted to also have in FCP 5.1 (don’t ask why!).

Because I still wanted it to be accessible in FCE, I copied the project file and converted one of them to FCP.

It seemed to work OK and I can now continue with the project in either application – or both simultaneously if I wish to demonstrate my ambidexterity!

Was I just lucky or is this indeed a safe way to ensure that I don’t lose the ability to continue the project in its original application ?
