okey dokey! (dont worry, we all had to start somewhere)
you’ve got your footage. make a composition for it, but the footage in the composition.
select the layer. hit control+D and it will duplicate the layer. in your duplicate layer, find a frame that you want that the boom isn’t in. at that point, right click the layer and click Time>freeze frame.
then, go to the top and select the pen tool. this is your mask (rotoscoping) tool. clicking will add points. simply mask around the top of the image enough to adequately block the boom mic on the layer below it.
THEN, while the second layer is still selected. hit MM (m twice quickly) and you’ll get all the properties for the mask you just made, which includes feathering. feathering sort of blurs the edges. so up the value on this until no noticeable line is there anymore.
and voila! movie magic.

July 11, 2008 at 1:09 am in reply to: Problem with the reflection pass and After Effectsi have no idea if this would work, but its worth a shot.
BUT. if you put a compositing tag on everything but the mirror. (and uncheck everything but seen by reflections). THEN you add the diffuse layer to the multipass, and render it to a new name.
import that to after effects, then using the diffuse (transfer mode>stencil alpha) ON TOP of the reflection layer (which is now set to transfer mode>normal), it should cut it out nicely. then just drop THAT comp into the previous, and voila!

no no. i get it. i use particle illusion for most everything too.
my point is that particle illusion isn’t good for moving the 3d space. that’s all.
90% of the time i use it too. i was just trying to see if there was a better way to make better looking fire in particular just for the 3d applications.

i just emailed you Brian. thanks for your help.

like i said…i’ve gotten better results in particle illusion as well. i’m more or less trying to find a way to get better results out of particular, because for certain applications, the workflow–as you mentioned– gets a little tedious going back and forth when i could just do it all in particular.

Did the transcoded footage play correctly on your computer? Have you been able to get your DVD to play on another system?
thats a great question. the only place i’d checked the transcoded piece was IN encore, and it looked alright. i’ve played my dvds on a number of systems, and they all look like they’re frame blending.
What was the source footage shot on, and how was it imported to your editing system?
the source was a panasonic dvx100b. it was imported via firewire on a sony deck into premiere pro cs3.
You said you created a “24p transcode preset”. Since this implies there was not one available by default, that would lead me to believe you might be using software that is older….
unless i missed something, i couldn’t find a 24p transcode preset inside of encore cs3.
What kind of machine are you using? Basic system specifications could prove helpful.
i’m using a BOXX 3D boxx w8300
Dual quadcore, with 4gb of RAMWhat software (i.e. Premiere Pro 1.5) did you use to edit the footage? Did you use the editing software, Adobe Encore, or something third-party like Procoder 2 to transcode the footage?
the footage was edited in premiere cs3, rendered out uncompressed avi from after effects cs3, transcoded in encore cs3.
Which settings did you use (in as much detail as possible) in creating your 24p transcoding preset? The transcoding article I linked to above goes in to great detail on the exact settings you need to use.i made a preset based on the VBR high quality preset in encore

the dvd burner is a SONY AW-Q170A. the brands vary from standard format memorex to dynex to hp to whatever. i’ve tried a bunch of different single layer brands.
You noted that you are able to view a different 24p DVD on your progressive-scan player. Assuming that the working DVD was not made by you, do you know who made it and/or what the different factor(s) are in the way it was produced?
truth be told here, i have no idea if it was a true 24p progressive scan or not. i was sort of assuming since motion pictures tend to be 24p. like any major hollywood movie is what i’m talking about.

i do have hair to hair turned on.
and i’m SURE it’s a needlessly complex model. haha. i just hate the thought of starting all over again since i worked so hard on it.
would you mind if i sent it to you to check out?

ok. this is probably the absolute WRONG way to go, but…
1. i started with this stupid program called “facegen” and used 3 pictures of my face to start building.
2. not being too pleased with these results, i took the model into zbrush and finished modeling there.
3. i pulled that into UVLayout and made the UV maps.
4. i took it back into zbrush for texturing my face onto it.
5. added hair in c4d.
the only other bit of info i can add is that A: the thing has a lot of polys. B: the hair is a few layers. is this dumb? (ie: sideburns are one hair object. eyebrows are another. then each part on top of the head is a hair object)
i’m pulling my hair out (no pun intended) trying to figure this out. short of scrapping the whole thing and starting over, which would kill my soul, i’m not sure what to do.thanks everyone for your patience
