my guess is that, if you’re referring to the cut outs that ARENT daniel craig, they shot footage, then rotoscoped the video to maintain stylized look. meaning, they rotoscoped the white of the bad guys shirt. it doesn’t look to be an effect: just a lot of hard work, which is why you don’t see it all that often.

oh…and personally, i still prefer to roto in AE, just because i have more control and better results. but i’m stubborn.

yeah. mocha AE can export an image sequence. so, for instance, if you’re rotoscoping a ball to remove it: mocha will track and roto the ball. then you export an image sequence with alpha. then you can put that over the ball footage and use the “alpha inverted” track matte (or whatever) and make it disappear.

shine doesn’t work in 3d space. so what you could do is get your camera data fixed, next that comp into another, and apply shine on that.

it’s all just 3d camera movements in after effects, placing the text at the next position where the camera stops moving. the man is green screened, and then color corrected to the point where he’s two colors.

for the record, they time lapse their tutorials when they screen record. so we really have no idea how long it takes to RAM preview.

okey dokey.
i did an “align normals” function an re-rendered. i’m still getting similar random extreme jutting like in the first render. it appears like the hair isn’t passing through the mesh AS MUCH…but it’s still there.
thank you all so much for your help, i’m just totally confused as to why this is happening. i did a test render with a sphere and a hair object, doing the exact same motion, putting the hair collider tag on the sphere, and it worked like a charm…of course this was all at the defaults. is there something in the hair material that i’ve messed up in trying to make the hair look like it should? could it be something in the hair OBJECT itself that i’ve tinkered with? i’m so lost. it doesn’t make any sense.

ok…hmm. how do i say this without coming across as a TOTAL newb.
i’m a total newb and i’m not really sure if my normals are aligned. and as far as i can tell, i haven’t added any forces except turning on the collision in the hair.
like. no wind or anything.
i’m really sorry i’m so stupid. most of my LIMITED 3d work has been modeling machines or random props for compositing. nothing like this.

i duplicated the layer twice.
on layer one, i did a cutout filter. then i just used the “color halftone”
on layer two i desaturated, then did an outlines filter, and used the darken transfer mode, i believe.

hey dave,
my webseries has constant comic book themes running through it, and through countless trial and error, i’ve found the best way is pencil, paper, illustrator, photoshop, after effects, in that order. i tried this plugin, along with a bajillion things like it, and nothing works for me like drawing it myself.
