While I never had to cut video tape, as in the first example, I was an assistant editor for a show where the tape was assembled as in the second example. In those days a good editor was one who could manually pre-roll the playback tapes with enough precision to make the cut happen with +/- 15 frames accuracy.

First of all the icon for a multicam sequence is subtly different – for a normal sequence the icon has 3 tracks aligned asymmetrically, for a multicam sequence the icon has 5 tracks of the same length perfectly stacked in a pile. Secondly if you double click a normal sequence it opens in the timeline, but if you double click a multicam sequence it opens in the source viewer. There is a specific “open in timeline” command for multicam sequences accessed by right clicking.

The problem is you have to target the track that you want multicam playback from. Ppro will only play back from the lowest targeted track. In your case you have track 3 targeted but your shots are on tracks 1 and 2. Note that Ppro will only show multicam, and let you switch cameras, on one track at a time, and it is always the lowest targeted track. If no tracks are targeted it will default to track 1.

You can build this type of transition using Ppro’s gradient wipe with your own gradients made in Photoshop or you could buy the “Supa Wipe” plug in that does exactly what you want.

The multicam system with Ppro is as follows:

First select your clips and make multicam sequences from these clips using the “Create Multicam source sequence.” These are your sources, but they are not clips, they are sequences, which is why you don’t select them and choose “create sequence from clip.” Instead they must be edited into an “editing timeline.” A good way to create this “editing timeline” is to select one of the individual clips that went into your multiclip sources and then “create sequence from clip”- then delete the clip. This way your sequence settings in the “editing timeline” will match your multiclips.

Then you can either drag your multicam sources into the “editing timeline” and start switching cameras or drag it to the source viewer and edit into the timeline while switching cameras. To see the multicam sources as you edit you need to “enable the multicam viewer”, which is Shift+Zero, while you are in the “editing timeline.”

I’m assuming your using a CC version of Ppro.

Are you using the “Create Multi Camera Source Sequence” command to create your multiclips? If not why not?

This is correct.

Don’t use “create from clip” with multiclips. Simply create a new sequence that meets your needs. Then either drag the multiclip into the sequence or open it in the source monitor and edit into the sequence and you should get all 8 tracks.
