I just tried the demo of Pluraleyes and while it sunc my material perfectly it doesn’t overcome the FCP limitations as concerns multiple clips from the same camera on one timeline – what it does is split it up into separate multi-clips, albeit it does it automatically, which is handy.

It’s a nice little tool but most of my shoots are well engineered, with identical time code sent to each camera, so it doesn’t have much appeal to me.

Final cut Pro is a clip based multi-cam editor — 1 multi clip for each set of camera clips. You can’t combine different clips from the same camera in one multi-clip. With your project I would make a separate multi-clip for each set of camera tapes.

The only work around is to create new files that combine all clips from each camera into 1 new mov file. When I do that I create a timeline with each of the cameras laid out on separate tracks but in sync with one another – Track 1 has all three clips from camera 1 and then track 2 has all three clips from camera 2 laid out in sync to track 1. Then export a separate movie for each of the tracks and use those new files in a single multi-clip.

Except when working with p2 files from Firestore Drives I don’t think this extra work is worth it.

Minor point, but you said “RAID 1 is not exactly safe. RAID 5 is what I would consider safe.” – Raid 1 is each drive being mirrored by another drive – it’s the safest Raid setup there is With 8 drives in Raid 5 you have 7 drives protected by 1 drive, in Raid 6 you would have 6 drives protected by 2, but the same box in Raid 1 would be 4 drives protected by 4 – the ratio is alays 1:1.

I’m an x-edit*or and have been using FC for about 5 years. Took about 3 months to totally get edit* out of my head, and more importantly, out of my hands. After about a year I could no longer operate edit* without a manual nearby, on the rare instances when I needed to update something.

There are many things I miss about edit*, many ways in which I think it was a better cutting tool, but gone is gone.

I never tried to make FC act like edit*, never tried to make an edit* style keyboard work, just accepted the differences and limitations as they were. When you start dating Sally, it’s best not to call her Nancy.

Flix for exporting to flv from within Final Cut. I use it all the time.

Yes the UVW is a pig and SONY intentionally crippled it in many ways, as they do with much of their industrial product line, in order to keep selling the high priced lines. The simplest solution is to get a cheap distribution amp and send your signal thru it and then to then to both the Beta input and the Beta Sync In. Don’t need a camera for that.

They’ve been doing it for years. With the older cards it’s a setup in the Blackmagic control panel, processing tab, and it affects all the outputs. In the newer cards you can have simultaneous HD & SD playback.

If it were my $700 and the Decklink had all the features I needed, I’d save the money. Aja has better tech support and better features especially for up and down scaling, however the Decklink is a very solid product and if you don’t need the other features, spend the money on more memory for your MacPro.
