  • Can I go from blackmagic to AJA

Posted by Herb Sevush on October 23, 2009 at 3:12 pm

For the last few years I have very happily been using Blackmagic Decklink cards for my 2 FCP systems. However it’s getting harder and harder to deal with the fact that Blackmagic doesn’t play well with 720P30 – it lacks an easy-setup for it and can’t downconvert it on the fly as it does with 720P60. Since 90% of my work is 720P30 this is a PITA.

I’m about to upgrade one of my systems and am thinking about going with the AJA Kona LHe – Question:

Will I be able to work with files interchangeably between the 2 systems – Both intel mac pros – one with my Blackmagic card and one with an AJA card – and if so is there anything I need to be aware of.

    Thanks.

[Herb Sevush] “thinking about going with the AJA Kona LHe”

The current model is the LHi..better than the LHe. Can upconvert and cross convert. FYI.

Yes, as they both capture to standard QT codecs. They say AJA Uncompressed or AJA ProRes, or BLACKMAGIC Uncompressed…but it is just plain ol’ vanilla uncompressed. Files will work fine on both systems.

    Hello Herb

I was wondering if you have purchased your AJA system yet and if so, how it was working for you? I am in the same boat. I am purchasing a DeckLink HD Extreme to use with FCP and Protools, but need to have it compatible with an AJA Kona 3. We will be working exclusively in ProRes. Hopefully you can share some of your experience in how the 2 cards work together. Thank you for you time.

    Anthony –

My plans changed and I haven’t, as of yet, switched over to AJA. I still intend to in the next few months and after speaking to more editors I now feel comfortable with the fact that there will be no problems with legacy files.

Herb, thanks for the quick response. I’ve read a few of your posts and you seem to happy with the BlackMagic card. I have been working almost exclusively with the Kona 3 so I hope I don’t see much of a difference. Thanks again for you time.
