I don’t understand why you think you need the Kona 3. It would be the worst product choice since it is digital only, and you wouldn’t be able to come in through component.

I think part of your problem comes from the fact that Canon HDV cameras do not truly record in 24p. It does something as it records 1080i60 to emulate 1080p24.

Looks like barefeets.com was quick to test with the 8800GT:

Better, but not where it should be in my opinion.

  • [Michael Gissing] “They turned up without spares?? That’s stupid optimism, not pro service. “

No, that’s a service centre dealing with the limitations Apple has set for them. Warranty replacement parts are only available after the problem has been diagnosed and they ship a part based on that particular serial number of computer. So, there’s no option of getting in extra parts to fall back on if there’s an additional problem.

February 28, 2008 at 3:49 pm in reply to: Final Cut Pro vs. Premiere

Jerry is totally right regarding this. I think it’s safe to say that anything that can be done in Premiere can be done in Final Cut and then some.

Support for the software is probably the most immediate reason to go with Final Cut. Most existing editors and schools that are training editors are divided between Final Cut and Avid. A better bezier tool (I’m making this example up) does not make up for a smaller talent pool and less support from hardware and software vendors.

It’s probably the only reason why Avid is still selling as much as they are now.

October 1, 2007 at 5:13 pm in reply to: 8-core or dual core mac pros

[Patrick Troy] “Im using an 8 core and have run into memory issues rendering HD.
My tech advice is that Leopard will fix these, but how long will it take for Leopard and FCP to be functioning smoothly utilizing the 8 cor”

Keep in mind Apple recommends 1GB of memory per core for use in Compressor. If set up correctly Compressor will launch a separate rendering process for each core, but each requires enough memory to run in separately. I see in your profile you only have 4GB of RAM.

I say get an 8 core (if it fits in your budget) if you do a good deal of rendering / encoding. It will pay for itself in the first six months with the time saved.

June 21, 2006 at 7:49 pm in reply to: Shake for $499!

[bogiesan] “Man, you should have heard the photogs shriek when Apple dropped Aperture’s price from $500 to $300!”

Yeah, but Apple gave those purchasers a $200 credit for the Apple Store, which is pretty unheard of in the software industry (and I believe a nice gesture).

I am subscribing to the belief that Apple’s next generation of compositing tools will be built for realtime features, so that they can go head to head with Flame workstations. This may all be part of a new tier of premium tools (as if Shake wasn’t premium to begin with) like this Final Cut Extreme rumour.

It would be a shame to see Shake go by the wayside. If the rumour is true, I can only hope that the capabilities are roled into further updates of Motion.

I know that you’ve mostly narrowed it down to sleep issues (after all these years, why do Windows and Mac computers continue to have sleep issues?), and turning off sleep is a good thing to do for all editing systems.

Most people never talk about power when they have system issues. Though this may not apply specifically to your problem I think it’s good to point out that a number of people have crashes due to dirty/variable electricity. Having your system running through a decent UPS will solve that issue, plus it gives you the added bonus of allowing you to save your last bit of masterful work 15 minutes after the power goes out.

March 22, 2006 at 8:49 pm in reply to: Power Mac G5 Quad – for advanced video editing

[jwedit] “Hey, while the quad g5 will certainly be an ample solution, why not wait a month and see what happens with the intel chips in the next month or two.”

Nothing will be released in that short of time. Intel’s Conroe doesn’t have a ship date until 2nd half 2006. Even if it is announced, programs ohr than Apple’s may not run effectively on it. I’m thinking of After Effects specifically.

Quad is a good choice. Get the 7800 video card and you won’t have much to worry about for the next few years.
