Is it too much to ask for a date estimate for when we may see the next firmware update?

As a follow up to my original question and concern, AJA has introduced start/stop record based on time code transmission through source SDI signal in their latest firmware update.

It’s hard to say. The ProRes codec is great but it doesn’t save you from garbage-in, garbage-out. I would run a test by capturing directly into your computer from the camera through your Kona card. Your Xserve RAID is fast enough to handle uncompressed HD so bring in some test shots in that format. If you can appreciably see improvements in the footage you shot in that method compared to the same shot compressed down to HDV then you will find it worthwhile to include ProRes (and the Ki Pro) in your workflow.
If the results don’t show a noticeable improvement, it could be limitations of the camera’s sensor or the lenses in front of it, and a Ki Pro can’t help that at all.

Also, check the preview in Compressor to see what detrimental effects the Mpeg2 compression will have on your text. Some fonts (especially fine ones) don’t take well to scaling or interlacing. You may need to choose a typeface that stands up better.

DVDs are standard definition. Your computer’s display is at least two to three times as high in resolution so every pixel needs to be doubled or tripled (or worse) in size.
Select ‘actual size’ in the view menu of DVD Player and I bet it looks clean, since the window will be resized to around 720×480.

I had that problem as well. The camera was set to record 1080psf23.98, but the SDI output only does 29.97, so that’s what the Ki Pro saw. I verified to make sure it wasn’t the Ki Pro’s fault by sending out a signal from my Kona card and it saw the 23.98psf just fine. Camera manufacturers scream and holler about what frame rates/sizes they record, but never make mention about what their outputs (SDI, component) can do.

[Jonny Hal] “Since you fellas seem more interested in flogging each other than in answering my original post — I’m gonna look elsewhere for some expertise re: the best codec to use.”
That’ll teach ’em!

[gary adcock] “*To arm the automatic recording over SDI you need to set the >TC IN< to SDI RP188 and >ARM RECORDING< to TC/REC KEY."
Thanks Gary, I am unable to track down an arm recording option in the config menu or the manual, so I’m assuming you are working with pre-release firmware that we may be able to look forward to in some time.

Thanks for the reply. It seemed that the AJA folk were implying that it is one of the standard features, and things like lens tap and firewire would follow in later firmware revisions.
Guess we’ll have to wait a little.
