The main difference is the IOP348 versus the 341 and the supported cache. That makes the 1680 series significantly faster than the 12xx series.

    1. Export to DVD:
    a. Export to DV AVI and let Encore transcode, or
    b. Use AME to trancode to MPEG2DVD

    2. Export for Vimeo as 1280×720 WMV @ 5000 Kbps or somewhere around that figure.

Don’t try to make it larger than around 120 MB for a 3 minute clip. No visual advantage and very long buffer times.

What is “Best”? It is not difficult to come up with better HDD configurations, but it is always a matter of balancing cost and benefit. Your suggestion makes perfect sense if the storage capacity is sufficient.

If you want best, consider a 128 GB OCZ Core SSD as a boot disk for OS & programs.
For media, consider 8 x 1 TB WD Caviar Black disks in Raid50.
For project/scratch consider 4 x 1 TB WD Caviar Black disks in Raid3.

Make sure that all 12 disks are hot swappable and use an Areca ARC 1680iX-12 controller with BBM and 4 GB DDR2 ECC cache.

With a good backplane installed and hot-swappable bays, life could be even easier. Copy your files to an internal SATA disk, hot swap with an empty disk and store the full one for later use. Swapping is even easier than exchanging externals and the disk speed of SATA’s is around three times faster than USB.

  • You can have DV or you can have photos, DV photos do not exist.

Also, your disk setup could not be worse. Only 1 external disk with a very slow USB connection. Use at least 2 internal SATA disks, one for media and one for project/scratch. Furthermore check your temperatures.

AVI means crap. What if I say I use files on my PC, does that tell you anything? No. AVI is just a wrapper, it is about the codec used within that wrapper.

No Quicktime. MS DV AVI type 2.
