meshlab, metashape, even cinema 4D! saving the mesh with axis at bottom as a .obj, closing and starting C4D and importing .obj….and axis is back in center of mesh again.

as I say, probably basic mistake, but I don’t know which mistake I’m making.

    Thanks Steve,

I’m certainly going to look into that.

    Thanks Steve for the explanation.

The thing is: I’m trying to find the best solution to present 3D scanned art objects in a standalone 3D viewer. The consideration here is file size against detail. I’ve got to combine 2 searches here: find the right 3D standalone viewer: Right now I tend to use the Microsoft 3D viewer. And find a way to present the files in highest possible detail while still being able to open them. Now I’ve got files of 200 mb with texture, usually .obj or .fbx files. It takes a long time to load, if they load at all. Smaller files with a displacementmap could be a solution. Maybe something is possible like mipmapping for textures….a similar technique with increasing level of detail of a mesh?

    Justin, thank you for replying.

So a displacement map adds polygons to the model, but in a different way than subdividing the mesh? hence the longer render times? if so, than why would we use a displacement map anyway?

Thanks all for your input and Wayne for sharing your workflow.
Bob pointed out in a different question about trimmer window video quality that settings can’t be changed. since I’m editing stereoscopic I can’t use trimmer window anyway it seems because my comps’ cpu/gpu wouldn’t allow smooth playback.
The workflow with timeline editing will be the nearest thing to a comfortable one. maybe with expanded edit mode, although I don’t see much gain in that.
    anyway, thanks.

Oke Aleksey, I’ve tried again but after pressing the ‘a’ to put a selected part from the trimmer window onto the timeline and press L to play trimmer window again, it definately starts playing in timeline, not trimmer window. So that’s in my case. Obviously not in yours so there must be some kind of switch to keep the trimmer window selected. Any ideas?

    Thanks

    Hi
I mean trimmer window in combination with editing window. (see http://www.sonycreativesoftware.com/vegas_pro_trimmer_window “….You’ve just made an edit using very traditional source/results three-point editing methods.”) But even besides 3point…..do you have an answer to the question?
    thanks very much

Thanks John for this answer. Will put it in my notes, because it will take some time to get used to it and part of workflow.
