July 15, 2008 at 10:25 pm in reply to: major crashes after new esata card, conflict?

    Hi Bob,
I come with cap in hand and toeing at the ground..(please sir… I want some more…advice)
    🙂

Looks like your onto something here. I have gone into the tech specs of the chip on the card (the chip is a Silicon Image SiI3132 PCI Express to Serial ATA Controller) Card is a Raidon.

It comes up with this in the tech specs…

    “• Supports 1-lane 2.5 Gbit/s PCI Express”

In expansion slot utility I don’t seem to be able to manually change the numbers, just choose one of the profiles. In any case, it says its running at maximum speed at 1x which makes sense from the tech specs.

So a 4 lane chip is needed specifically for video rendering? Would that be right?

(I digitised about 10min of footage at 10bit uncompressed SD last night. That was ok, no crash. But any exporting or rendering in applications to the raid crashed everything.)

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

Thank you luke for taking the time to help.

I followed your suggestion, moved card to slot 3. And assigned the second profile.
It now shows slot 4 ‘running below maximum speed’ with blue x4 and a yellow x8 bar.
Slot 3 has a x1 bar and says its running at maximum speed.

I tried another render and it crashed again.

Should I re-assign it back to profile 1? Is the performance of the BM card now effected with this new profile?

See the weird thing is I can copy to the raid, and I can play quicktimes off it as well.

    I’m baffled.

    Hi Kristian,
    thanks for posting.

I unistalled the BM drivers and attempted the render again. It did render for longer (about 3min instead of 1-2min) but same crash eventuated. (force restart)

So does that all but rule out any conflict with the BM card?

    cheers

    update…

Have increased memory to 7gigs. Turned off blackmagic output in after effects.
    Still crashed

I unistalled the blackmagic drivers and again tried to render. It rendered for longer (3min as apposed to 1-2min) but still a crash.

    Any ideas would be appreciated.
    Thank you.

yeah I wondered why the deathly silence! No matter.

My recommendation is to talk to Steve at epowermac. He has been a really great help and talked though everything I needed to know.

I’ve all but settled on getting the system I linked in the above post.

    Good luck!

Best advice is to meet as many people in the industry as you can.
A really good way of a least meeting people is asking whether you can just meet them just for advice about the industry rather than pushing them for a job.

People love to talk about themselves if someone is willing to listen, and you can learn a lot from anyone who has been in the industry for a length of time so ask lots of questions.

If you present well, look motivated and are genuinely interested in getting advice from people face to face, people will notice and before you know it someone will say, “why don’t you come and help us with this shoot we are doing…” and your away.

Worst case scenario is you have gain some valuable knowledge!

Good luck, stay motivated, if you want to do it you will.

Sorry bit off topic to original point..but just to counter….

The hyper sensitivity towards nudity is very much an American thing. It is not a world most of us in the west live in. For us, the news story isn’t about, say, a breast being exposed, its how Americans tie themselves in knots over it. The Janet incident was hilarious to watch from afar.
The expression that is used constantly
    “Only in America…”

Seriously, Venus de Milo is being blurred out????
    Oh man thats funny…

I suppose it comes from everyone taking each other to court and suing the pants of each other. Which gets back to the original point… see a lawyer.

    Hiya,

Yep, my problem was with adstream too..
In the end I did nothing, and said send it to the stations anyway, backing my judgment on it. And it was fine. No rejection.

I haven’t changed my workflow at all since then and they have not questioned any more.
I output to a QT H264 codec (as adstream recommends) from after effects. Never even take it into FCP. (15sec commercials so don’t need to)
I have always run an adjustment layer over the top of everything with a levels filter and pulled in the black and white output by about 8points. Its never given me grief, except for that once.

    Oh well.
Obviously by the sheer volume of people falling in behind me and voicing their concern on this thread that I’m on a winner here! 😉

If its what you gotta do then its what you gotta do. I’ll remain disappointed at the changes, but will always support the cow. Its obvious your intentions are good, but there are always two sides to anything. I hope I may have given some food for thought though on these changes though.

May your pastures always be green fellow bovines. 🙂
