RAIDS RAIDS RAIDS…
Ok, dipping my toe into this mine field and it seems to come back with more questions that answers.
Firstly, this is what I am after.
a raid 5 system with about 2 terrebytes storage. It MUST easily handle 10bit uncompressed SD. As for High def, I’m happy with ProRes HQ as my top quality.
What I have is
Macpro
FCP 6.0.3
Blackmagic HD extreme. My budget is roughly $1 per gig. Hopefully less. (Australian dollar)
currently I’m using a small internal raid.
Now I’ve looked at the caldigit and other stuff, I’ve looked at the various reviews for various raids here and checked forums.
but a few questions….
I have seen various quotes on data rates for eSata Raids from 140MB/s up to 300MBs. How can this vary so wildly for similar spec’d machines? (example the discontinued cal digit S2VR HD suggests up to 300MBs but something like this, which seems similar
https://www.epowermac.com.au/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=255&idproduct=995
is quoting 140MB at raid 5.
(by the way, I’m based in Australia. This is a local supplier I often go too for external drives)Why the big difference?
What does mini SAS have over eSata? If at all?
Is a RAID with its own RAID controller preferable? Or using a RAID card quite ok?
I’m looking at this unit

As after a long talk with these guys we narrowed it down to something like this.
– a couple of things about this unit as I understand it.
If a drive dies. A new drive needs to be put in before you can continue. So unlike some units, I can’t just continue until I get around to replacing it. I need to replace and rebuild before continuing. I understand the trade off here as opposed to a system that can keep chunking through. But is that the only difference?
any other thoughts you may have?
THANKS!
