strange, color dodge and overlay were available in AE as far as I can remember.
are you looking in the correct menu?
the color modes menu is in the timeline window under “Mode”
Hit F4 to toggle is this menu is not visible.
A newly created layer will have it set to “Normal”

What modes DO you see right now?

I have found a way to create this effect using trapcode particular.
basically, create a layer, fly it around in 3D space. Then apply particular to another layer and parent (expression) the emmitter’s x,y,z coordinates to the previous layers x,y,z.
Set particular to not disperse the particles, and emmit enough of them, so wherever the emmitter travles to, a line is drawn. You can set particluar to emmit any kind of layer, in this case a flat layer, giving a ribbon kind of look. works quite nice, but NEVER as good as a true 3D app would do.
Also, the ribbon will not wrap around other objects in 3D space.

I am still waiting ofr Adobe to implement some better 3D capability (like Discreet flame, smoke)

it can be done using AE. Basically use reshape to create and open and closed mouth positions.
Then animate the reshape amount to match words.
You can automate this (rather crudely) using AE’s convert audio waveform to keyframes tool.

this is not true cartoon animation, but could work on less detailed cartoons.

Yes, this was done in true 3D space. Could have been anyone of the many apps/systems that support true 3D space, even flame or smoke could pull this off.

Unfortunately not AE (unless you really broke your back using forge freeform.

hopefully one day AE will support true 3D space with 3D objects (hear that Adobe!)

simple. copy the path/shape in Illustrator.

in After Effects, select your camera’s position propery in the timeline, then paste.

a motion path with keyframes is created.

look into the PVM series by Sony. The 14″ model is pretty cheap/good

KEEP IN MIND: you want to have “blue check” option on any NTSC monitor you get, so you can calibrate to
color bars. There is plenty of info on the web how to do this if you’re not sure.

to get you video out of your Mac you’ll need a video card (Aurora Video Sys, Kona, Black Magic)
or a device like the aja i/o, which is firewire.

    good luck!
