OK. I haven’t done any HDV, so jump at me if you like! -;)

I cannot really see why you choose to take one very compressed format (HDV into another very but differently compressed format (DV, and then try to capture as uncompressed. This is 3 times re-encoding your media before an edit.

First: You cannot capture uncompressed 8 bit over firewire (if that’s what you are trying), even when you set your capture presets as such. If you don’t have a capturecard, you’ll have to do the conversion in FCP after capturing.

You’ll probably need a RAID to do anything usefull with uncompressed on a G4.

I just cannot understand why you don’t just capture as HDV?
OK. You’ll find plenty of people around here telling you: HDV – Don’t do it!
But as you’ve already recorded in that format, stay there.

If you have the hardware to handle it, it is maybe an idea to transcode to some more robust format for editing, especially if you plan to do lots of effects and tinkering with the image. DVCPRO HD comes to mind.

Do not downconvert to an SD image before you’re finished.

    eh…

But I’ve maybe just misunderstood your whole post…

    Cheers!

    Good luck.

Always buy the biggest and baddest machine you can afford, that’s the one which will serve you the longest.

I notice you have very little RAM (512 mb from your profile), and that’s gonna slow down renders a lot.

Try putting in at least 2 GB more. More than that if possible.

Are you talking about a Motion projectfile?

Also a RAID and a capture/playback card will be needed to playback to a HDCam deck.

But you can of course take your finished render somewehere else to lay back to tape.

  • eh… How much memory do you have?
    How many layers at once?
    Effects?
What kind of disks are you playing back from? Are they ful?
(RAIDS slow down as they fill up)
What is the format of the final sequence?
Have you nested/mixed down audio before output??
    Have you trashed prefs?

  • If you have that Radeon, you do not have an AGP slot.

The update should work, but if it doesn’t the xlr8yourmac hack seems to work for most. (Have not tried that for myself).

What is the bug report with the update?

There has been reported quite a lot of trouble with the latest Quicktime (7.04). So much that Apple has provided us with a de-installer. (just a probably way off hunch…)
Which version of system/qt/FCE are you trying to piece together?

    Good luck!

Have you tried over at Corporate video? (With this last explanation)

I think I’ve seen subjects like this over there.

I guess this is sorta what you want to achieve:

    You could ask over there…

  • Hm… What kind of iMac/Graphics card do you think you currently have?

If you’re trying to install FCP 4.x on one of the new PCIe iMacs, just search the posts.

[MitchJi] “Is QT Intel Native (not yet I don’t think)”

Probably is. Mr Steve claimed that all software shipping with the new machines is native.

[MitchJi] “has it been optimized as well for Intel as for G5?”

Hard to say, as QT for windows (and thus some of the Intel specific code has been written earlier) has been out for years, I guess it isn’t too bad.Maybe it’s even pretty good.

All the apps that were demoed are QT heavy apps.
