My youngest son is 10. He just started his own business and I sat him down in front this video. We talked about it afterward and lil man soaked in exactly what I was hoping he would. When I asked him the philosophical statement of this clip he quickly responded “be the best and the money will follow.”

You should be a professional videographer and editor first. You’ll hone skills, know what it takes to make these projects, and know what they are worth. Our telling you to charge 5 grand a video is not going to help you.

Set it where you want it. If they can’t do that, move onward and upward. Moving on is the only way you’ll ever see a five figure raise, brother. Don’t wait on them. They hired a student. And don’t get mad at them either. Just be ready to move to a different market with a big grin on your face.

Forgetting to be the best is a common mistake in all business. -
The rule of thumb is as long as it takes or whatever their budget allows. Some ten munute pieces are talking head with cuts only of b-roll and some are 20 layers deep with graphics, animations and sweet sound design. This is why folks pay by the hour. Should they have tweeks… it’s on the clock. Should they want to discuss each edit… it pays a lot of bills. Sometimes a client just wants to talk about their day. You’ll find a big part of your job is just being a good listener.

While companies and networks scaled back due to economy and had a great push from the writer’s strike to go reality-vibe, they’ll have no reason to go back to huge crews and over spending when the depression lifts… and that won’t be for quite some time yet.
They way we approach business has changed. The amount of video in demand has only grown though. It’s a matter of releasing old school mentailties and looking forward. We all have multiple skills in multiple areas. Ultilizing them all is importent today. We could couild all rest easy specializing in one role 5 years ago. If your specialty isn’t making a finished product today, you aint gonna be making many products. -
And experience.
It’s bad enough that some kids leave school with a degree thinking that entitles them to a high paying job. To lead some of them on in thinking they can just start a business they know nothing about is the opposite of educating them.

MC5 has some nice features. It’d be worth venturing into. You’ll need After Effects. Every Avid editor leans on After Effects as Avid has not updated their DVE since the first MC 5 was realesed more than 15 years ago. I know they have Avid FX but it’s hardly worth messing with, especially since you’ll be getting After Effects.
You can throw some cool plgins on After Effects too, giving you 3D capabilities without having to buy a 3D app. You’ll always be extruding, bevelling and lighting logos. You’ll dig being able to do this in After Effects. I recomend Sapphire effects for your Avid. Lots of bang for the buck.
And speaking of bang for the buck, step back and rething going the mac route with FCP and Motion. good stuff. -
Just right click your composer window, go to info and change it to drop frame.
