I subscribe to that and wish I could always just adhere to my hourly rate. When folks ask for a bid though, they are usually needing a number within their budget. Don’t offer that and you’ll often get passed up on. Being a one man band, I know exactly how much I’ll put into a project based on their opening words. I don’t mind spitting out a “cool, how does 7 grand sound?” As budgets tighten, this has become my saving grace, really. They like the no hourly rate surprises vibe for turn-key projects. If it’s just an edit, the hourly rate is no problemo more often than not.

Well that was before camera dudes with tunnel vision on a little LCD screen hopped on the boat. It’s by far more dangerous than the fishermen themselves. It’ll be aight though. If I weren’t indestructible, I’d already be dead. 😉

When you bid a project, you simply make way for revisions. This does not include added product but it almost always includes revisions. As long as you ramp up your bid to allow for these, you’ll be all good. This is simply a growing pain. Make em happy and bif higher next time.

You have no rights to it. When people don’t sell videos, they just assume nobody will see it. That is true if playing it in your living room only but the piracy happened when you copied it.

To avoid consulting for nada, when asked to bid on a project, I simply offer a price. I break nothing down on paper ort otherwise. The price is how much the finished piece will cost through my company.

I cut to broll when wanting to see what is being talked about and I go to talking head when I don’t have b-roll or to introduce em. The only person who wants to watch a talking head is the head who was talkin’.

I use em as stitchers to tell a story and I never know what will be needed until editing what I have. I think they made videos to written copy in the 80s but I can’t quite recall all of the 80s.

The different opinions are a result of the different rates. They range from nada to infinity. While the average may be between 500 and a grand a day, those who make that know what their services are worth before charging it.
In a nut shell, you’ll charge what you must until you charge what you can.
