Not sure what they did, but playing back 4k files on my older Mac Pro is a lot smoother now. I used to have to go to 1/4 resolution to get somewhat smooth playback and now I can playback at full res. Good job Adobe!

I think ‘Pro’ software is any software that can be used to make money, period. So whether one uses FCPX, IMovie, Premiere Pro, Sony Vegas, Windows Movie Maker, etc. It can be considered ‘Pro’. Just my 2 cents.

If it were me I’d order a used 12 Core Mac Pro 5,1, buy as much memory as you can, and get a Nvidia Titan GTX 12GB graphics card from MacVid Cards. This way in a few years you can upgrade the graphics card without having to buy an entirely new mac. If you’re set on a Trashcan Mac then definitely get the dual D700 graphic cards.

I would go with a 3Gbs ssd drive from OtherWorldComputing. From what I’ve read if you use a 6gbs drive in the Mac Pro you will only get 1.5gbs speed, but if you use a 3gbs drive you will get 3gbs speed. They also have a PCI slot drive that gets faster than 6gbs speed. Here Are links:

If you have a free pci slot I’d go with the card, if not the 3G ssd drive is the way to go.

Buying a new Mac (Vader helmet) or a 2011-2013 MacPro?If it were me I’d by a 2012 MacPro 5,1 12 core, add as much ram as possible, and get the best video card, such as a MacVidCards Nvidia Titan. Then in a few years you’ll be able to easily upgrade the graphics card when a new one comes out. Currently it’s not very easy or affordable to upgrade the trash can. Premiere cares more about the graphics card than anything else.

October 28, 2015 at 12:21 pm in reply to: Does anyone think FCPX is NOT a Professional NLE?I think if you use any editing program to make money, it could be considered professional. I own Final Cut Pro X, but haven’t used it on any paid gigs. I do know a lot of people that do use it professionally, though. It’s a matter of personal taste and what’s best for the project. I’ve used Avid, Final Cut Pro 7, Media 100, Turbo Cube, and Premiere Pro over the years. I’m excited to see where Davinci Resolve goes. For me I’ve been using Premiere over the past 2 years and love it. If a project comes along where I think Final Cut Pro X would be best suited I wouldn’t hesitate to use it.

Good list. I’ll settle with them fixing the timecode bug that happens with certain ProRes Clips.
