Best SSD for 2010 Mac Pro and CC 2015
Posted by Peter Tours on January 26, 2016 at 8:33 pmI have a 2010 Mac Pro 12 Core 2.93 used almost exclusively for CC and am ready to jump to an SSD system drive.
Please suggest the best for the purpose. It has to be SATA mount (drive bay) as my slots are full or would go w PCIE mount.
Is there any benefit to buying a 6gbs SSD when my system is only 3gbs?
When I install the SSD I will also be updating from Mavericks to El Capitan which I understand puts the TRIM issue to rest.
Thanks in advance for your advice.

January 26, 2016 at 10:29 pmI would go with a 3Gbs ssd drive from OtherWorldComputing. From what I’ve read if you use a 6gbs drive in the Mac Pro you will only get 1.5gbs speed, but if you use a 3gbs drive you will get 3gbs speed. They also have a PCI slot drive that gets faster than 6gbs speed. Here Are links:

If you have a free pci slot I’d go with the card, if not the 3G ssd drive is the way to go.

January 27, 2016 at 4:30 pmA better buy, and I just bought and installed one is the 1TB Samsung 850 PRO series. It supports TRIM through terminal and has a 10 year warranty. There have been some misinformation about this drive and TRIM support, the articles you will read have to do with a specific RAID in Linux OS.
Super fast and not too expensive. I bought mine through B&H in NYC.

January 27, 2016 at 10:28 pmInteresting!!! That is 2X as fast as the OWC 6G SSD I’m running on my older 2008 Mac Pro. It appears that Greg is absolutely correct, in that it’s probably running at either 1.5G speed.
Since mine is only my boot drive I’m not overly concerned, as it is twice as fast as a single spinning disk, however, it is somewhat surprising that it can’t perform up to 6G specs like many spinning disks can. For example, two newer 6G Hitachi striped together as RAID 0 deliver approx 370MB/sec, which is way faster than any two 1.5 or 3G drives striped as RAID 0.
