February 10, 2006 at 3:17 am in reply to: What is the longest AE project you would do?

The longest piece I’ve created in AE was 16 minutes…but my typical project is from 1:30 to 5:00.

I typically make all my cuts and audio work in PPro and them import the project into AE and do all my f/x, compositing, etc. Then export the entire piece back into PPro for additional sound f/x and exporting.

I just find that having to create multiple AE comps and then exporting/importing them into PPro is more work than just completing it all in AE. Gives you more freedom to experiment freely as well. This may change as I migrate to the the new Studio Bundle, being able to dynamically link, and work with higher quality codecs, but it’s pretty effective right now.

If you’re just dealing with DV clips without FX the RAM preview is pretty quick. When dealing with FX, it’s important to take advantage of the multiple quality levels and try to solo layers a lot…makes long format work more bearable.

    I have dual 2.8Xeons with 2GB ram.

February 3, 2006 at 4:15 pm in reply to: layers disappear in final render (not ram-preview)

I ran into this just recently. I’m guessing you may be in a similar situation.

In my case, I had 3D layers with a 2D layer underneath AND on top. The RAM preview looked fine but wouldn’t render the 3D layers. If you precomp your 3D layers so that it’s now 2D you should be fine.

This is discussed in the help directory…something to do with the “priority of 3D rendering”.

January 17, 2006 at 4:29 pm in reply to: Premiere Pro 2.0 …..Where’s the Beef?

For my workflow I was really hoping for 4 things…

-Native HDV & Other Capture Card options(AJA)…Great, gives us some options other than Axio.

-Tighter Integration with AE…all f/x carry over from PPro to AE…looks like this has been addressed.

-The “Chain of Effects” like AE…really thought this would’ve been added. I do some work on Avid DS too and having those presets and a keystroke to access saved presets is huge, especially from project to project. They did add a “transparent layer” which you can add several effects to and it will affect the underlying layer. I just think this may be cumbersome. If anyone who has beta tested this can describe how this is working for you let us know.

-Time Remapping…looks like we’ll still have to do this in AE…why?

If you’re going to use this a lot, get a Parhelia card, or something similar. My card is much more responsive and accurate than my firewire out. Plus you can then jump back and forth between AE and PPRO switching inputs on your monitor, or using a simple A/B switch.

If I were a gamblin’ man…and I am…I would say it’s very likely…got to “keep up with the Jones'”

Just wondering when we’ll see the release…thought NAB Post was a shoe in.

    Ron,

Yes, as a whole, you could easily argue that these keyboard/toolset functions are more important than Time Remapping itself. If 2.0 comes out with 20+ additional workflow enhancements, I could see this being a big part of the release.

My “wish list” has a couple worflow items too…miss being able to copy/paste IN to OUT segments of a timeline for example.

My point was intended more towards the individual comments such as, “why can’t I roll edit over an entire clip”. To me, having to Delete clip, hit N, and then continue your trimming, is much less painful than what we’re up against with Time Remapping…Open AE, New Comp, Copy(3 clips and audio), Paste, Ram Preview for every change, Set Render Settings, Render, Import, Insert.

I think you’ll see continued improvements in workflow functions in PPro over consecutive releases, just like AE has evolved, but not including Time Remapping just seems to be a big void for me and others who have posted on the Adobe wish list forum. In fact, look one topic down in this forum…:-)

Hopefully we’ll all have something to smile about in 2.0…Time Remapping has just been a thorn in my side because of the pieces I work on most often.

    Dave,

I agree that there is room for improvement regarding the functionality of tools, keyboard mapping, etc…and some of these may be addressed under, “improved toolsets and workflow” when the release comes out…

but I think you’ll see the top of the list highlighting things like…Multicam, True HDV Support, Better Media Management, Improved Video Collection Integration, Masks, Additional Effects…and hopefully…Time Remapping…;-)

Hope there’s “something for everone” when we get the news!

FCP, Xpress and Vegas all have some form of Time Remapping…so yes, In my eye, I think all the main competitors have it.

Yes it’s in AE but from a workflow perspective, I feel it’s a big void. This is an editorial function and these decisions should be executed in your NLE.

If you go to Adobe’s forums, you’ll see multiple, “how do I ramp time” questions from new users(coming from other apps) and several emphatic feature requests for this from long-time users.

My point is that time remapping is fairly significant when compared to many of the keyboard or tool requests people are moaning about…:-)

Just wanted to add…I think there is one major feature left our of PPro at this time that everyone would have to agree on…Time Remapping!!…every other app has this and has for some time.

This is an essential part of the editorial process…if this was the only addition to 2.0, they’d have my money!

Other than that, better media management and improved integration with the “collection” would be on the top of my list, as well as applying custom/compiled effects to multiple clips via hot buttons(like AE).

I really like what I see in Axio, but having your Matrox effects carry over into AE would be essential for my workflow.

A little dissapointed we haven’t heard anything from Adobe at NAB Post so far this week…stay tuned.

  • I had the same problem with DVMatte Pro in a prior version of AE and could never find a cure. Seems less prevalent in 6.5 but just yesterday, I noticed some shortened RAM previews when using the plug-in.

    I believe there’s a new version coming out…maybe it will be fixed…:-(
