The Outline
You want to see all that lovely HD resolution? OK, you will need BluRay. You will need BR Discs; you will need a BR Player; BR rendering and that all important HD TV. Period.
Government Heal Warning: A DVD player will not play a BR Disc. DVD technology is based on the Red Laser technology and BluRay is based on, well Blue Laser technology.
“Red”, DVD laser wavelengths are BIGGER than the “Blue”, BluRay Laser wavelengths. Utilizing this smaller laser wavelength, you can get far more information on a same sized platter – here, that platter means a BluRay disc.
Things ain’t what they first appear, or seem . . .
You can NOT expect to get all that lovely HD info onto a DVD disc and see it on screen. It wont happen . . . . HOWEVER! There is a thing called “Upscaling” – yeah, I know, you’re hearing a contradiction coming your way – and this is a kind of voodoo or halfway house for those of us that still produce DVDs and have them play on say my SONY HD 42″ TV from a SONY Upscaling DVD (note that’s a DVD player!) and the output IS quite stunning. And here is a quote I’ve nicked:“Even on a 40″ 1080p HDTV about 25% of consumers see NO difference between Blu-ray and DVD (and another 30% don’t feel the difference is worth paying more for)“
As to getting a very small file from going to DVD template, I’ll let others chime in.
OK, I really do hope my ramblings above have given you a bit more clarity on what has been, for the past 10 years, a veritable minefield of misunderstanding and frustration.

December 13, 2012 at 5:59 am in reply to: Vegas Pro 12 – MC AVC longer render than V11???This is not straightforward, and I couldn’t figure it out. I think this could be a callout to SCS. But, there is a work through. It is thoroughly boring and life-drainingly obdurate . . . .
OK (deep breath)the MC AVC MP4 Default options for me:
VP11 by default the MC Template did Automatic selection. Render Time =27seconds
VP12 by default the MC Template did CPU selection. Render Time = 47 seconds
Now FORCING MC AVC MP4 options for me:
VP11 MC Template did Forced CPU Only. Render Time = 69 seconds
VP12 MC Template did CUDA If Available. Render Time = 27 seconds
What I can draw from this is that render speed for MC AVC MP4 “works” in both VP11 and VP12 and reflects the same 27 seconds – this is good.
However . . . .
The Default status varies between VP11 and VP12 and this tricked me. It would appear that this default status has been changed from VP11 to VP12. Now, basically this wouldn’t matter BUT, if using the Batch Render Script – which I previously DID use – this tripped me up as the Batch Render would pick the Default settings for VP11, if using Batch render in VP11, and then the Default settings if using VP12. This in turn would mean a QUICK Batch render in VP11 and a SLOWER Batch render in VP12!
Phew . . . . .

Good advice Steve!
Another reason NOT to UG to Win8. I really rely on MM. Thanks for the heads-up.
Apologies, I can’t help either.

[Linsey Roberts] “I’m going to feel like a real numpty if that’s all that was wrong!”
As I said before, you’re very thorough in your responses!
And NO, a numpty, in my book, is somebody who wouldn’t ask in the first place – but you DID. Listen, I didn’t know about that setting, I asked and YOU knew the answer! So, thanks for your help too.
And yes, let’s see if that was all that it was.
Toodles

[Linsey Roberts] “Did I cover everything? :)”
I wish everybody was as thorough with their responses as you! Good stuff.
OK, for a DVD-5 disk type I got for a 3 hour coming out at 4.648gbs, running VBR:-
Min=2544
Max=6792
Avg=3392What and where is the kilobit sizing entered?
Anyway, I’ve got an initial outcome, no safety and straight 3hours, of 4.6gb.

Linsey you have the Trial (Demo?)version/s? What are you rendering to? MPEG2? What template are you using? And where are you setting those numbers?
Cheers

[Linsey Roberts] ” I use Mark’s DVD Bitrate Calculator to choose my vbr settings, with a safety margin of 5% and setting the total time to about ten minutes more than the actual video”
I also use Dave’s BitRate Calculator, and very good it is indeed! Now, what actual numerical settings ARE you using?

Steve, Brad is saying that “timeline is 15 minutes long and video preview playback is flawless” and that the chopiness is on the rendered output. Wouldn’t that suggest that the media is fine to start with, that the CODEC is working for the Media being used and that it is solely the remaining workflow, here that is rendering, which is creating the issue for him?
If Brad could post a tiny bit of the media to try out, I would be willing to interrogate it for him.
Cheers
