Also renders the 24p much, much faster than MB too, and avoiding that trip to AE can save quality and time.

Thanks Rita! I just hope your people are also committed to the extra time and money it will take to do it that way. Is there even a advanced pulldown removal tool for uncompressed video – I thought Cinema Tools and FCP would only do it on DV or DV50 codec video??

Well, you can see where you are in your video in perfect clarity by looking at the video output of the deck or camera, not relying on the computer monitor, and you can set your in and out points wider than you need, “handles”, so that when you get it into FCP you can trim it precisely where it’s quicker and easier.

You can do it, but you won’t like how it looks.
Although I find the attitude of the producers strange because in England, every film originated (or 24p for that matter) programme on TV is sped up – from the Flintstones to Star Trek, to every movie ever seen on British TV. It’s just the way it’s done because every alternative is visually un-appealing. Sure, they pitch shift the audio back down now, but the video and audio temp are still 4% fast.

And you’re right – that’s where the Decklink comes in handy, but not precisely necessary. There’s many a cash starved person who’s relied on their camera for this purpose over the years.

23.98 to PAL is usually done by speeding up 4%, and to NTSC by addition of 3:2 pulldown.
If your SDI card doesn’t add 3:2 pulldown, you can use the converter to add it. Usually I use Cinema Tools conform function to speed from 23.98fps to 25fps.
