We’re looking into getting an FCP system and I was wondering about NTSC to PAL conversion. From what I’ve been able to find it seems as though the Nattress plug-in is the way to go, if you don’t go the hardware route. However I have not been able to find any info from people who are using it for long projects. We are currently working in 23.976 HD on an Adrenaline and we deliver in SD both NTSC and PAL, so I was wondering if the Nattress plug-in outputs an acceptable broadcast conversion for entire projects. I would test it my self with the demo, but we don’t even have an FCP system yet and are trying to figure out everything that we would be able to do with it. Any info you guys could give would be greatly appreciated. TIA

    Regards,

23.98 to PAL is usually done by speeding up 4%, and to NTSC by addition of 3:2 pulldown.

If your SDI card doesn’t add 3:2 pulldown, you can use the converter to add it. Usually I use Cinema Tools conform function to speed from 23.98fps to 25fps.

Thanks for the reply. We’re not so worried about the 23 to 29.97, because we can do the pull down, the problem is 23 to 25. We normally do the 4% speed up, but the problem is that the producers absolutley don’t want to speed the material up, they want an actual time matched conversion and they won’t budge on this, so the idea is to do the pull down to NTSC and then do an NTSC to PAL conversion. So that’s why we’re looking into the plugin. Is it possible to use the G film converter to go from 23 to 25 or does it just do the speed up? Thanks for the info.

You can do it, but you won’t like how it looks.

Although I find the attitude of the producers strange because in England, every film originated (or 24p for that matter) programme on TV is sped up – from the Flintstones to Star Trek, to every movie ever seen on British TV. It’s just the way it’s done because every alternative is visually un-appealing. Sure, they pitch shift the audio back down now, but the video and audio temp are still 4% fast.

Is your response to us not going to like how it looks in regards to using the plugin for a 23 to 25 conversion or is it in response to using the plug-in to convert a 2 hour show from NTSC to PAL? Thanks again for your all your feedback, it is greatly appreciated.
