I guess the real issue is, that if this announcement is true, Apple better have new products with the new chips on sale monday, or their sales of everything but iPods will drop through the floor so fast that it won’t be funny. Say they take a year to transition to the new products as indicated by the article. That would mean a year with practically no sales of computers from Apple – how are they going to justify that to their shareholders? I mean, why would Apple move to a intel based architecture?? Instead, surely knowing that they’d sell no hardware for over a year, they’d just ditch the hardware completely and become a software company? None of this really has the ring of total truth to it. The issues are just so much more complex than the article suggests.

I would think that firewire monitoring from the computer would have to work in all modes, 25, 50, HD. But it would be nice to have confirmation!

Is it the application that won’t open, or that you can’t connect to the drives. Check your ethernet connections, and have you assigned IP addresses to the controllers or are they on DHCP. If they’re on DHCP, turn on internet sharing on your mac as that will start a DHCP server that the drives will lock onto and get an IP address from.
But why reformat RAID0? Mine are formatted RAID5, and each half is joined together with the OS X drive utility via RAID0, so the whole thing becomes RAID50 and I get ample speed for uncompressed HD. According to the BMD disk utility, which I find conservative, I’m getting over 200MB/s write and over 300MB/s read.

That article is not evidence that AE is cleaner, but that Cinema Tools is a program where you have to get the settings just right for it to work. I, for one have never ever had any problems getting perfect 3:2 pulldown removals using Cinema Tools. You just have to get the cadence setting right and it works a treat.

The HDV deck is a bad choice for a deck, IMHO, due to it being a camcorder mechanism that doesn’t take big tapes and doesn’t write any external TC of any kind. You’re far better off buying the HDV camera to use as a deck, as then you get a camera too. I really think the Sony HDV deck is a bit of a con.
However, as you point out the DSR-11 is great, as is the DSR-25, and both a dual standard NTSC / PAL which is really useful.

The bad news is that Cinema Tools is arcane and complex. I don’t know if the new version is any better, but I certainly hope so. Really, it’s al down to reading the manual and lots of experimentation with the reverse telecine option.

You need to reverse telecine everything to 23.98fps.

Michael, I’d be curious to know what it looks like running off SD out of your Decklink and through the HDLink to the monitor? I’m using an Apple 23″ display on the HDLink and it works very well.
