  • Two questions about HDV in FCP5

    Hello!

Does anyone know if it’s possible to shoot or edit 4:3 aspect using a Z1E and FCP?

Also I don’t have an HDV monitor at the moment, can I still get synch sound by changing the audio/video settings to the computer? or do I use an analogue out from the camera to a regular monitor?

Basically what’s the best way of getting synch when cutting HDV without an HD monitor, or should I use a regular CRT broadcast monitor just for synch?

    I’m confused!!!

    HDV is always 16:9

You cannot view HDV back through the camera like you do DV. You need to use a HD card like the decklink and appropriate SD or HD monitor to see it externally.

I have had a different experience from Graeme with monitoring. I use an old Sony firewire to composite adapter (a DMC-DA1 or something like that – it’s not in front of me right now).

I have been able to monitor on a standard NTSC monitor (the image comes in letterboxed) right from FCP. I haven’t tried using the camera as an adapter, but it seems reasonable that if the DA1 works, a camera should.

You’re monitoring HDV in HDV MPEG2 format straight out of FCP while editing???

Interesting conflict of opinions.I’ll have to test.

Haven’t answered my question about synch though. If I don’t use a ‘broadcast’ external monitor, will I have synching issues?

apple advocates the use of apple cinema desktop, any monitor connected to an AGP-graphics card as reference monitor. They don’t recommend it for interlaced video though.

Still I expect it to generate pretty good quality on the 1080i signal of the Z1, I have not seen it yet though.
