monitoring hvx footage
Posted by Joslyn on May 27, 2005 at 6:07 ami have a G5 computer running fcp 5 w/ dual computer monitors and my dv deck going out to my ntsc monitor. i’m looking at getting the dell 24″ HD lcd monitor(for viewing and color correction of 720/1080 footage) and was wondering if i will need any additional cards to do this? thanks.

May 27, 2005 at 12:38 pmThe HDLink works well. From what I was reading elsewhere, if you put component HD video into the Dell, it gets stretched from 16:9 to 16:10, which, to me, is unnacceptable. The HDlink would make sure you see 16:9 with small black borders top and bottom on the monitor, pixel for pixel from the HD source.

May 27, 2005 at 12:56 pmHi folks:
Apparently, the ‘stretching’ to 16×10 on the Dell is not a problem — there are controls for FULL SCREEN, ASPECT (which displays 16×9 with slight letterboxing) and 1:1 for pixel-to-pixel display.
That being said, accoding to Mike on HDforIndies, the display is passable in the analog component input setting, but I believe he said it’s not as good as when it’s used with the HDLink.
Best, JIM.

May 27, 2005 at 1:06 pmThanks Jim, that’s good to know because the Dell is quite a little bit more affordable….

May 27, 2005 at 2:58 pmthanks for the info! a little confused. so w/ an hdlink, i can go dvi into the dell but where would i connect the other end? an ati x800 has dvi and vga connections. does that mean in order to use the hdlink, i would need to also purchase an additional card such as the decklink hd?
is there a way of monitoring HD footage from an hvx the way we do w/ dv cameras or is it too early to say? thanks!

May 27, 2005 at 6:36 pmThe HVX200 will have analog component out. The Dell has a component input.
To use HDLink you would need to convert analog component to digital HD-SDI. You could use an AJA card for that, but what’s the point?

May 27, 2005 at 8:12 pmgreat to hear doc. so i’m wondering why one would spend the extra $ for an hd link or some other 3rd party device? thanks again…

May 28, 2005 at 2:01 amYou’d connect the HDLink to a Decklink card, which would output your HD over SDI and Component, and perhaps an SD downconvert too. The reason you’d use the HDlink method is that you can access very good calibration through it, and it’s showing a more accurate portrayal of the video than what FCP will show off the graphics card.

May 28, 2005 at 1:46 pmI don’t think so, as I don’t think that has Y’PbPr out, which is useful, and the dual link card allows you to output SDI at SD and HD simultaneously, which might be useful for monitoring options too. You’ll have to go over the specs carefully looking at exactly what you’ll need.
