I don’t usually go to AE from Avid, so I’m not sure how AE reads AAFs, but if it is in fact reading a “linked” AAF…the aaf has no media, just links to the media Avid is using, then you would need to do a relink in Avid back to your source shots. Then create your AAF.

Programs like Resolve will allow you to point the program to different media when you load the aaf, allowing you to have offline in one program, but go straight to online in the other program, but I don’t know that AE can do this.

Another option would be to relink to full res in avid, and output high quality versions of your shots back into AE. To be honest, I don’t think a lot of people are using your workflow..Avid to AE for Color correction. They are either doing color in Avid, or moving over to Resolve.

Hey Stacey, are you saying you had to deactivate 4.3? (I didn’t think anything before 5 or 5.5 was on activation…just dongles? Maybe thats just the way we used it back in the day.

There is an activation program that gets installed with Avid. (mac version might be in utilities). If you’ve already uninstalled it, without deactivating it, you’ll probably have to call Avid and get them to deactivate it.

For future information, if you aren’t on a dongle, you always need to decativate before you uninstall the software. The software now actually reminds you of this while you are uninstalling it.

If your project is too big, usually it feels clunky, slow to respond to anything. Takes forever to load.

If you want to break it up, I would start by breaking up your sequence into smaller sequences. Just duplicate the sequence, a few times, and start cutting it up.

If you want to shrink the project, do the same thing. Open your project, do a save as, and then cut out alternating sections in the projects.

Typically I’ve found the media in the project less influential than the size of the sequences, which is why a lot of us work in “reels” for bigger projects.

As for your problem, it is just as possible your graphics card is dying, or an update snuck into your box, which is not happy with the older version of Resolve.

(I’m surprised you can run resolve 9 on a MacBook pro)

At what point is it crashing?
What is your media type and location?
What kind of drive are you working with?
How was the media created- or is it AMA?

These are all contributing factors that anyone will need to know before they can even attempt to answer the “why” question.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Avid?

I’m always amazed at how reluctant people are to simply clean out the program and reinstall it. It may fix the problem, it may not, but it only takes 10 mins to do, to make sure there isn’t something corrupt in your system.

And to keep it even easier, if you want to move it around a lot, the project just needs to be somewhere you can access it.

When you go to open the project, you have those radio buttons for the location of the project. If you copy or move your project to an external hard drive (I would still put it inside some sort of an “avid projects folder”) you just need to point Avid to that folder.

I usually zip up the projects before I move them to a new location, where I unzip them. I’ve had instances where something didn’t copy correctly, and I’ve started finding it just easier to spend 4 seconds to zip it up first.

On a side note, I keep most of my projects on a drop box account, accessible by all of my edit systems. That way I can open them from pretty much anywhere.

It should work the same way. You say the DIT didn’t use ama originally…what did he do? Resolve? As long as he had it set up correctly, you should still be able to make a bin of AMA links in Avid, and then relink your final timeline to those links, instead of the low res media. If Resolve wasn’t set up correctly, and the metadata isn’t in tact, then you will have issues.

In my experience Premiere does the same thing as Final Cut.

Avid is the only box I’ve used that properly converts the timecodes needed into a list for Resolve.

I usually wash projects given to me from FCP and Premiere through Avid first. Unfortunately, that usually involves some manual shot replacement.

I’m wondering if you were editing with mixed frame rates in FCP.

I find that becomes a nightmare for that box and premiere, as they convert the media “on the fly” and then spit out a list pointing Resolve to files with timecodes that don’t exist.

I think you’ve hit the nail on the head. You may need to jump up to Media Composer 8.5.

If you are trying to transcode media for After Effects, in 4k, from a product that doesn’t support 4k, I’m not sure how that could work.

You might want to look into Resolve to create the media as well. Just make sure your reel id radio button is set correctly in the preferences tab, so the proper metadata stays with the media.

That’s a good question. I would think it will point to the original files still…but I know one way of finding out…give it a try. What do you have to lose?
