I have been a user of Mimiq for about 5 years now, and yes to use it you need either Avid Ultimate, or a perpetual license to use bin sharing.

The original poster did not mention shared projects, just using network drives, and you do not need anything special for Avid to simply see a network drive.

If i turn off Mimiq, i simply lose the ability to invoke bin locking when multiple users are on the same project.

I actually worked on a series two years ago at a facility with 3 suites, and a brand new (non Avid) shared storage system. I assumed we could do bin locking, but they didn’t have Ultimate, just basic Avid. This did not limit any of us from seeing the network storage however, we just had to be careful about which shows/bins we were all using.

The OP says they did turn on alldrives command. Sounds silly, but I would try that one more time, and make sure it worked, as that would be the most common reason to not see a network drive. If not that, then perhaps there is something odd in how they are being shared.

Just move it from the Avid MediaFiles/mxf/(guessing)1/ folder on the internal drive to the same location on the external drive. Relaunch Avid, so it can rescan and rebuild the database.

Check out your media creation settings. Pay attention to the tab asking about filtering drives based on resolution etc.

This question gets asked all the time, and the answer is the same. These are two competing companies, and neither on has developed a way for you to convert a project to their competitors.

If you want to “convert” the project, you will need to do it manually. Export aafs for every timeline.

rebuild your bin layout and folder structure inside Avid, and populate it with media.

Couple of things.

I typically use avid aaf output from caption maker to bring into Avid, so i’m not sure about any mxf options. (Is this video with embedded captions out of caption maker?)

Having said that, when you say it “looks” wrong, what are you using to judge this?

I find Avid’s ability to display the closed captions less than perfect.

I would always check my output in a different program, (i use Switch) or through my hardware scopes.

My qnap is a bit older of an model. I’ve had it for about 4 or 5 years now.

It is a TVS 1282T3 I have the base station plus 2 expansion modules plugged into it. It has been rock solid since i got it. (Just waiting for a third expansion to show up)

I run 10 g from the base to my suite, which populates a 10g qnap switch, and feeds 3 computers. I have my drives set at raid 5, which steals a bit of speed, but i can’t afford to lose the whole system because of a bad drive. In the years i’ve had it, i’ve had two drives go down. 1 about a week into the build, so that was replaced by the manufacturer, another about 3 years later. I always buy an extra drive for each unit, so if an issue happens, the drive is sitting there waiting to go in.

Having said all that, i would think most mxf media, even at 4k, should work fairly well even on a two drive setup like the Lacie. I would install and run the blackmagic disk speed test and see what you are getting. Perhaps your system is just bogged down somewhere. I would assume the Lacie comes with high quality/7200 rpm drives?

Google will find you lots of options for cabinets for your computer and hard drives. Just make sure it has adequate ventilation. Years ago our old DS was in a cabinet with a fan on the back to promote airflow. It cut the noise down incredibly well, but it also caused the drives to overheat as the design didn’t include a fan on the front to allow the air to escape. I had to build a new front door and add a fan sucking the air out on the front to solve the problem.

They are typically called server cabinets, but you can get them fairly small.
