In fusion, on your shading tab in the 3d text settings, you select the Material- image option, then near the bottom select the image you want to use, I would usually set the mapping to word instead of character.

There’s nothing wrong with Skype, it just depends on the client, and the ease of hook up.

Not everyone has a Skype account, and not every client wants to have to sign up for on. With some clients, its just easier to point them to your website, say click here, and have them see your screen. (There is a bit of a wow factor from many clients that way as well) Anything to differentiate you from the competition.

In the corporate world, there are plenty of places that don’t allow extra software to be installed on the workstations, so Skype might not be an option.

I found sling box worked well, but the idea of having to get them to use my account never sat well with me.

I have looked at the black magic web presenter, and am quite interested in it, although I would have to try to remember my Skype credentials…haven’t been on it in years.

As with many of these streaming programs, they only get you half the way. You still need a reliable server to do the actual streaming. And most of us would much rather have a password protection of some sort for this as well, which a lot of the free ones don’t offer.

AFAIK, OBS is just another encoding. You would still need to send it to Ustream or livestream, or youtube or facebook or Skype or some other place to host the stream. (That’s why I’m looking into hosting my own right now)

I have Movie Captioner as well. The developer is pretty good at updating it. About a year or so ago, I realized his .scc wasn’t importing into Avid properly. We spent a weekend going back and forth with some tests, until we discoverd the issue, and he updated the program. It will import to Avid, but again, Avid can only do 608 out from it.

If Avid wants to wow us in their next update, they can always work on better ways to work with captions.

(if im reading this correctly) The fact that you transcoded to a format (dv) then ama’d then transcoded again does muddy this up a bit. Typically you would ama then transcode and edit.

You can try to ama to your original clips (mpgs and quicktimes) and try the relink listed below.
If that doesn’t work because of timecode issues, or something else that happened when you made the dv clips, then you can try to relink to your Ama’d dV clips.

If you still have your ama files, then collect them all up, select them in 1 or multiple bins.

In your edit bin, duplicate your timeline, right click on it and select the relink option. From there go to the relink to all selected clips in open bins. Play with the settings a bit. I usually change my name column to the second dropdown choice, rather than the default. Ignore extensions, and turn off match case.

There are tons of posts of this workflow on the cow. Do a search for ama relink or something like that.

For the files that you imported, you can select those and batch reimport. Avid will give you the opportunity to change your import resolution if need be to a higher resolution. (right click on a clip and select batch re import)

I’ve used slingbox with pretty good success. I have a ustream link on my website that i can point clients to. I’m in the process of setting up my own rtmp server and seeing how that works.

I’ve had anywhere from a 5 to 20 second delay.

At the end of it all, so much depends on the clients internet connection, as well as your own upload speed. If you have slow upload, and your client is on wireless, it could be less than optimal.

I always add a timecode burn to my timeline, and make sure the client knows they can’t just say “there” They have to give me a timecode. You do also have to listen for your audio coming back over the phone or skype…what ever you are using for communication, and try to figure out the delay. That will let you know that when they say stop…you have to go back x number of seconds on your timeline to be looking at the same shot. The trick is to be able to do changes, and talk to the client, while filling the gap of those 5,10,15 seconds, as some clients get impatient and can’t understand why what they are asking for isn’t happening immediately. Even when you explain the delay. (we’ve all worked with clients right?)

Blackmagic does now sell a device that will trick skype into seeing your computer output as a webcam. I haven’t had a chance to try it yet, but that may be a good route to go as well.

Thanks Bob. (Us independents are always looking at every penny) The Promise has been rock solid for me for about 3 or so years now, so i’d hate to not be able to use it. Your solution has probably just saved a few hairs on my head when i go to the Qnap. In fact i guess i could go with the non thunderbolt version and save a few bucks there. I think it still has 10g.

Bob I was just reading a review on the tvs 1282t, which stated that because it is using thunderbolt bridging over the network, it appears as a server, not DAS, as you stated. It also says it will make other thunderbolt devices you may have no longer appear in the system. I’m running windows 7 z820 with the hp thunderbolt card, so there is only the 1 connector on my computer. I’m also currently using a Pegasys raid for my main storage. Does this make the pegasys unusable in conjuction with the qnap?
