You will probably find that most of us use the glow effects from either Sapphire or Boris FX.

You can build one from scratch using your basic color corrector. Play with the gamma settings and the gain settings. They will give you a pretty good over exposure. The glow is a nice touch to add as well, but i don’t think Avid has a native glow filter. At some point you’ll want to get into layering of effects, and add them in as a screen or additive layer. So plug ins will eventually creep into the process…which is why most of us just use Sapphire or Boris. For any kind of online editing, they pay for themselves pretty quickly.
Just the legalizing filters alone can get you through a lot of QC reports, not to mention all the toys that clients are always asking for.

I don’t think it has been thought of as a “system meltdown backup” as much as a “crap, that sequence got screwed up”. In either case, look at it from the other side, you could always save your projects in a different location than your attic. I routinely back my projects up to a drop box account, and have run them off that same account when switching between facilities.

True, i have uninstalled Avid, forgetting to deactivate first. Then had to call up tech support and get them
to deactivate it for me. I think it was v5.0, and i didn’t have the license manager in my applications folder.

what is the codec?

When you go to consolidate, it will ask you where you want the new media to go. (you have to select a drive, or the consolidate button won’t highlight) The idea of transcode is to get the footage into the box for an easier edit session. AMA is great for a while, but sooner or later just starts to bog you down.

Consolidate is more for the end process, when your decisions are made and you want to get rid of all the transcoded or imported footage that you no longer need. You want to keep the final project on your box, but you don’t want to keep all 32 hours of original material for that final 30 seconds of perfection- you only want to keep the final 30 seconds worth of footage. (plus handles)

It might seem on the surface like they do the same thing, but they do have different purposes.

I was looking at dongles after the fact. They cost about 300 bucks i think. Not sure if you can get one for free with a new purchase. I was leary of the license system at first, but once you get it set on a couple of machines, it is very fast to deactivate from one box, and activate onto another.

Opening an older version is a good idea. Make use of your attic anytime you think something has gone corrupt.

I would usually start by deleting my media databases and even my MCState setting file. It’ll rebuild when you relaunch.

Rename your AvidMediaFiles folder to something else to put all your media offline…do you still get the error?

If it is a piece of corrupt media, on your timeline, not only can you try to narrow it down by playing your tracks out individually, you can set in and outs on the track and doing a “play from in to out” Mark an in at the head, and an out in the middle, and play from in to out. If the corruption remains, mark your out 1/4 of the way through the timeline. Keep doing this until you track down where the corruption ends. I’ve used this method to find bad media in the past (and corrupt title files)

If corruption still exists, open a clean project and bring bins from the corrupt one in, one at a time to see if you can find the corruption. This may tell you if the problem is the project, or a bin within the project.

If you have access to another computer, load AVID on it, and open the project on it (sans media) to see if the problem persits.

Troubleshooting is always fun.

If you came from premiere it should be similar…stereo to stereo…mono to mono

You started out by saying you hope you have given us enough information…you haven’t given us anything go on.
Mac or windows is a good start.
We know you have a kona, but you could help us by telling us how you have your suite wired. Are you using a mixer?. How do you think the wire path you have should be working.

If you can see the vu’s but can’t hear, my guess is a wiring setup is not correct. Your computer and sound card both need to be on the same page, as does your mixer and speakers.

From a settings standpoind, I would check your “audio project” settings and see if the “play mismatchd sample rates” is turned on. This will help if you do have a mismatch in sources vs project settings.

Check that your computer sound is using your kona for output. Check that your kona is using the correct audio settings, and that the correct cables coming out of the kona are going to your mixer

thats the spot. I’ve never used it, but in 10 secs of trying, here is what I figured out.

Drag the effect to your clip, or put it on an empty track up top.

Open your effects properties (tools effect editor)
open the area that says “caption text”
type your text
As soon as you start typing, a caption box appears on your screen. I’m sure you can take it from there.
