July 31, 2013 at 2:09 pm in reply to: Problems Capturing Using Avid Media Composer 6

Hi Zora, there are a lot of variables at play here, so i would begin with some basics.
(I don’t usually use firewire decks, but the basics of troubleshooting are always the same)

I am assuming you are connected via firewire?
i’m assuming your capture device is set to firewire within Avid.
After an autoconfig of the deck, can you shuttle the deck around using the Avid Interface?
Perhaps try a generic template as well.

Do you know what format your camera is recording at? Could there be a conflict between that and your sequence settings?

Some cameras make you go into a different mode to playback rather than record to tape(disk). Check that.

You say you are getting an error with Audio and Video connected at the same time. What happens when you turn one off? (i know you need both, but first things first…lets try to get something into the box)

I took a peek at the manual for the camera, and it looks like a pretty straight forward home camera. With a proper DV to firewire cable you should be able to hook it up to your computer without too many issues. Again, you do have to be in playback mode, not record mode.

Hope something works out for you

July 8, 2013 at 2:00 pm in reply to: suddenly can’t export QT refs???

I am by no means an expert on Calibrated Q. I’ve only used it to view mxf files from within a quicktime player. I output Quicktime Reference movies all the time, and i don’t have calibrated q on my system. There is obviously someting in your workflow that is using Q. You should be able to link to your canon footage without using Q, but perhaps Q was allowing you to do a direct import instead? Perhaps that direct import is simply a fast import that is re-wrapping the files? This might make it possible for the watermark to magically appear after the demo runs out.

Try downloading the latest AMA plugin for the Canon footage, ama linking to the files and then try your reference movie.

Again, not sure why Q is in the workflow at all.

  • Same idea as renaming a project after you have created it. Make a new project. Call it template.
Build it how ever you want it to look.

Then outside of Avid go to your Shared projects folder and duplicate the project called template.

Rename it what you want. “JobA”
Step inside that project and rename everything you see with the file name of “Template”.* to “JobA”.*

If memory serves correctly there are 3 items you have to do. Two might be settings and one is a .avp file?

  • Your dongle should – read-” this is how it used to work”- be usable for the version of software you purchased it for and any earlier versions. But be careful. If you bought 7, install it, register it, call avid and get them to give you the dongle update. The dongle doesn’t know you updated, Avid has to tell it that.

After the highest version is working, then you can try to install an earlier version and see if it works. If you do it the other way around- do a paid update, and have them update your dongle to 6.5, they may tell you that you are out of luck when you then go to update to 7.0 I doubt that would happen, but you never know.

All versions of avid products are available in their download area. You can still download MC 3.1 if you want to.

Job, i’m reading that note a bit differently than you are. I read it saying that you may lose some bin information if opening in older versions…not that you can’t open them.

” Any addition bin columns and functionality introduced with Media Composer 7.0 and NewsCutter 11.0 will be ignored when opening them in older versions.”

They do recommend 5.5 to 6.5 if you want to use an older version, but i’m not seeing a line that says anything before that will not open.

I’ll be going from 6.5 to 7.0 for a while, so i don’t know that it will affect me, but perhaps someone with an older version kicking around can do a test.

I Can certainly provide a bin or project once i upgrade.

Sounds like you either had a demo version, or full version that wasn’t properly registered so it was working in demo mode. In this instance, then yes it would “suddenly stop working”

Perhaps first have of the timeline was rendered with the demo still working, the second half rendered without?

No matter what the reason, the fault is not with Avid or the QT reference movie, you’ll have to discuss it with Calibrated Q.

Nevermind. Fell into the trap of trying the drivers that came with the device.

Downloaded new drivers from the ATTO site, and all seems to be working. Wish companies would stop sending driver discs. They seem to cause more problems then they are worth.

Hey Jorge, i’m running a (Nearly) identical setup to yours.

Quantum lto 6 ATTO H680 and Echo Express 11 for the chasis connection to a Mac Mini.

I can’t get either BRU or HP_StoreOpen to find the tape drive. Mini sees the Atto card, but none of the software wants to acknowlege the tape drive.

Before I try to locate a different cable, can you tell me if you did anything special in the setup. I’ve installed the ATTO driver. I installed an ATTO config tool, but it seems to be for a raid setup, not this particular card.

Under system information i have a SAS address- so it seems to see the card.

Am i missing any drivers? Quantum doesn’t seem to have any Mac drivers.

Did you do any voodoo, or did it just work?

    Thanks

Save your effect to a bin
    Multi select your timeline clips
Double click your effect in the bin

Be aware if your timeline clip already has an effect on it you will either overwrite that effect with a new one or you may get an effect does not apply message.

Alt drag effects to add more than one to a clip

    Glenn

  • Alt match frame will call up the last in/out point used on a clip
