Should add this info, as I would say it is PROBABLY important. . .

I started this project in FCP 4.5, on an external firewire drive. My boot drive crashed and I replaced it; in doing so, I went to FCP 5.0, then through software update, got to 5.1.4

Is my probably related to the fact that this project bridged two versions of FCP?

    Wow, Bill, you’re good.

Yes, I got the new boot drive about two weeks ago, and yes, did the software update which brought me up to 5.1.4 Probably shouldn’t-a-done it, heh?

I’ll try trashing the prefs and hope for a miracle.

However, I am screwed if I try to open this in 4.5, correct? There’s absolutely no way to backwards convert this?

Thanks a million, I really appreciate the guidance-=

    Have you trashed your prefs?
    I have not. . .should I?

Does this effect all of your clips?
    Yes

When did this start – mid-session, after a reboot?
Hard to tell about that. . .I’m ten minutes into the timeline and this is the first effect I have tried. I was able to modify the speed of a certain clip. . .but this was the first time I went into the Video Effects tab.

Can you create a new project and test that?
I did after reading your post and, no, I am unable to apply any effect.

Are the effects in the menu ghosted?
    I don’t know what you mean there. . .

Can you drop effects from the browser onto the clip in the sequence?
Tried it and it doesn’t work…

Can you paste attributes from other clips that may have filters already?
Again, none there to be had

I must say this is the first project I have done in Final Cut 5.0 ; I had been on FCP 4.5, but I was having problems with the boot drive; so, I scrapped it, got a new boot drive and went to Final Cut 5, hoping to get the latest and greatest. Afterwards, I had been warned that my system is on the brink (agewise) and might not handle FCP 5. I could reinstall FCP 4.5, but since I started this project in FCP 5, I don’t believe I can go backwards.

Thanks. . awaiting and appreciating any help. . .

Thanks folks. . .in the overnight rescue (since my panic attack), I have installed the new drive, loaded OSX 10.4 onto it, and will attempt to access the old boot drive and pull those files.

Serves me right for tinkering with the old boot drive BEFORE adding the new one. Stupid stupid STUPID! But, who would have thought using Techtools would have destroyed the drive??

    Thanks again,

I have tried that and the sound gets WAY OFF sync, whether it’s a five minute clip or a twenty-minute clip.

I phoned my partner and read him your reply about the RAM (or lack thereof) and he got a good laugh out of that. Yes, I am way behind the times, and subsquently, the eight-ball!

    Hi,

I know I’m living on the edge with that little RAM, and I am going to get a 2gig stick tomorrow. And that was kind of the reason for the post, too. I didn’t know if I could just get a 2gig stick, or if I had to buy two 1gigs.

Oh, yeah, it’s sluggish alright. Lots of burps when you play stuff back on the timeline, especially a project that is render-heavy. I’ve been meaning to add on, it’s just, as long as I was getting by, it dropped off the radar.

Yes, right now I had the capture now setting for 30 minutes, but obviously that’s not working. I haven’t tried capturing in five minute increments, simply because that would be sooo much match editing that should be unnecessary.

So, yeah, I believe you are saying get off of 4.5 and get to 5, which necessitates an upgrade to OSX 10.4. . .?

    Thanks a million,

    Hi Walter,

Thanks for your quick response. Also, the “import” and “capture” references have been duly noted.

Anyway, if I am on FCP 4.5, where should I be with Quicktime? I had heard that 7 was problematic. . .

    Thanks a million,

Yeah, this happens pretty much randomly; no, I don’t have the virus software installed as suggested.

I guess what I was saying is I am a quick trigger with a mouse, like we all probably are. And that probably has nothing to do with this problem. Again, if I’m in an application (usually FCP, DVDSP or Disk Utilities) I’ll be rolling along fine, and then one click to either close or save and there’s the spinning beach ball.

For a while this was only happening in FCP, always when I was in the titler. Click, click, there’s the spinning ball and I’d have no way out of it except to do a hard restart, as Force Quitting wouldn’t work. I’m just afraid that all that hard restarting finally took its toll. .

DiscWarrior does its thing with the directories, but Techtools freezes up alot during maintenance (running it from the CD drive) and I haven’t been able to do a complete optimization because of this. And sometimes, that secondary drive I spoke about. . .the 120. . .doesn’t even show up in Techtools. So the long and the short of it is that, no, the maintenance software doesn’t alert me to a problem because it’s never been able to get through a full battery of tests and maintenance.

If there was a problem with the motherboard, would all this be happening?

    Could this be virus-related?

Again. . .many, many thanks.. .
