Can’t Apply any video filters
Posted by Glenn Pniewski on September 6, 2008 at 10:05 pmPowerMac G4
867MHz
1.5GB RAMM
Final Cut 5.1.4
OSX Tiger 10.4.11
QuickTime 7.5The title says it all. . .I double click the clip on the timeline (and the wireframe does NOT go green) and I can’t do any Video Effect at all; no color correcting, nothing. Any ideas? I can provide more info if needed. This is just DV. . .no HD, nothing transferred from another medium.
Thanks in advance,

September 6, 2008 at 10:11 pmHave you trashed your prefs?
Does this effect all of your clips?
When did this start – mid-session, after a reboot? Can you create a new project and test that?
Are the effects in the menu ghosted? Can you drop effects from the browser onto the clip in the sequence? Can you paste attributes from other clips that may have filters already?

I have not. . .should I?Does this effect all of your clips?
YesWhen did this start – mid-session, after a reboot?
Hard to tell about that. . .I’m ten minutes into the timeline and this is the first effect I have tried. I was able to modify the speed of a certain clip. . .but this was the first time I went into the Video Effects tab.Can you create a new project and test that?
I did after reading your post and, no, I am unable to apply any effect. Are the effects in the menu ghosted?
I don’t know what you mean there. . .Can you drop effects from the browser onto the clip in the sequence?
Tried it and it doesn’t work…Can you paste attributes from other clips that may have filters already?
Again, none there to be hadI must say this is the first project I have done in Final Cut 5.0 ; I had been on FCP 4.5, but I was having problems with the boot drive; so, I scrapped it, got a new boot drive and went to Final Cut 5, hoping to get the latest and greatest. Afterwards, I had been warned that my system is on the brink (agewise) and might not handle FCP 5. I could reinstall FCP 4.5, but since I started this project in FCP 5, I don’t believe I can go backwards.
Thanks. . awaiting and appreciating any help. . .

September 6, 2008 at 10:47 pmThanks for the detailed answers….
When anything malfunctions in FCP, the first thing I do is trash the prefs. Might be a quick fix.
When you did the clean install on your new drive, did you run the Software Update utility until it had no new updates. You say ‘the latest and greatest’ which would be FCS 2, and also FCP 5.0. Which version are you running?
Also, it seems like your machine is below the 5.1.4 specs – here’s what I dug up –
A Macintosh computer with a 1.25GHz or faster PowerPC G4, PowerPC G5, Intel Core Duo, or Intel Xeon processor
Reinstalling 4.5 might be your best bet. It’s tough to find out that it might not work now that you’re already into your project.

September 6, 2008 at 10:55 pmWow, Bill, you’re good.
Yes, I got the new boot drive about two weeks ago, and yes, did the software update which brought me up to 5.1.4 Probably shouldn’t-a-done it, heh?
I’ll try trashing the prefs and hope for a miracle.
However, I am screwed if I try to open this in 4.5, correct? There’s absolutely no way to backwards convert this?
Thanks a million, I really appreciate the guidance-=

FC 5.1.4 is really stable, but need to works with the proper QT version. I can’t remember well which one but QT 7.0 or QT 7.1 more or less. It will work better than with QT 7.5.[Glenn Pniewski] “However, I am screwed if I try to open this in 4.5, correct? There’s absolutely no way to backwards convert this? “
No way to go back. You can try exporting an XML, but the results some times are not perfects.

September 7, 2008 at 7:45 pmIt’s a long shot – but check your Autosave vault in case you have a version saved from when you were in 4.5 – then open that in 4.5. I know its a long shot, since you had to get a new drive, etc. but maybe this hint will help someone in the future.
Good luck!
