It made it’s way on to the Avid list and the tides have turned 🙂

Hmm..any reference for this? My experience is that Nvidia drivers are better for OpenGL and pro apps but I would like to hear what they say.

[walter biscardi] “Silicon Color is not recommending nVidia for Final Touch HD on the new Mac Pro.”

Do they have justification for this recommendation?

I would expect it to be seen in the version release of FCS that coincides with Leopard. Clearly, Apple intends to utilize it in their own apps but the promotion of it was intended for other devs to plan for it.

Please excuse the dust from our speculation-based construction

If you are only concerned about FCP editing then (2) 7300Ts would be fine for dual 30″ cinemas. If you plan to use Motion, I recommend getting the ATI 1900XT even though it’s more money. It will provide a much more interactive experience in Motion.

One thing missing is the speed(lanes) of the other PCIe slots. Anyone pick up on that?

    Look like really nice workstations.

[Kevin Monahan] “If all you want is good slow motion, look into Re:Vision Twixtor and Re:Vision Fields Kit”

Yeah, but how much do those cost? over $600 together so you might as well get Shake and get the rest of the package. Since you can RT with FCP and Shake, it seems like a great plugin.

June 12, 2006 at 10:17 pm in reply to: buying a G5 for FCP

[Greg] “1. Is there a specific graphics card I should avoid or purchase with a G5? is the G force 6600 256 MB sufficient or do I need an upgrade. Is there anything I should avoid?”

As others have said, if you want to be productive in Motion then you need an upgrade. Otherwise, it’s fine.

[Greg] “2. I edit on Beta SP, Mini DV, and Jdigital S. Output to tape or DVD. What videocard would you suggest? AJA? Deck link?”

You may want to consider the Aja iO. It will give you some flexability.

[Greg] “6. Where would you buy this G5? Apple? BH Photo? Mac all? or Ebay?”

Be sure to check Apple’s “Special Deals” section. You can save quite a bit in there and still get the full warranty with the option to go 3 years.

  • It is possible to run OS X off of a F/W drive(I think it’s still possible on the intelmacs). I am not sure this will really be a useable scenario over the long run however. THere are just so many factors in making a system perform and HDV makes it even more complicated. I have seen several PC users build new dualcore AMD setups that have the same problem with HDV.

Now when you played off the internal drive it was better but still stuttering or in other words, dropping frames? How much space is free on the HD? When SATA drives fill up, they slow down. 1.5 gigs of ram should be plenty just to play back a single clip on the timeline.

One final thought…did you set the timeline up correctly by choosing the right preset? This is the life and death of fcp in getting the setup to match the format.
