When I say colorspace, I am referring to the video’s color sampling..ie. 4:1:1,4:2:0(hdv),4:2:2 and 4:4:4. You get better color rendition and clarity with each level although 4:1:1 and 4:2:0 are very similar. For some more detail on this, here are a few good reads:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/4:2:0
https://www.larryjordan.biz/articles/lj_sampling.html
https://www.adamwilt.com/DV-FAQ-tech.html#color_sampling
https://www.adamwilt.com/pix-sampling.htmlSo, essentially, you are generally better off working in a more accurate colorspace when you are manipulating the color – if you have the choice. Sometimes, it just isn’t worth it as you are trying to clean up a mud puddle by stirring it. With HDV however, it would make a difference by bumping the source to a 4:2:2 codec and never going back IF you are doing some serious manipulation.

Happy to help. Honestly though, you would see a large productivity boost if you simply went to a dual G5. I would be inclined to pickup a dual 2.0 now and then when the dust settles on the Intel desktops add a second machine and use the G5 as a rendering/logging station.
Just an idea…hate to see small animals or anyone using a 500mhz computer to edit on suffer needlessly 😛

Personally, I think the MBP has more potential for FCP than the iMac. The main problem I see with the iMac is the lack of storage expansion. It would be fine for DV but that’s about it. In theory, the MBP will allow for eSATA raids and you could use the lone fw port for an AJA iO. Now if you go with the 17″ w/ the FW800 port thne you get even more expansion options.
IF you really are only DV and plan to stay there for awhile then you would be just fine with an iMac I think. If you upgrade the internal HD to a 500gig then you will have a fair amount of space even without external storage. Seagate has even been tagged as readying a 750gig sata drive.

My question is do you need portability? The MBP is indeed a more powerufl laptop but it comes with portable compromises. If you don’t need portability, I would be inclined to pick up a refurb Quad myself. That would provide great performance for another 10 years like your G4 😉

[Borjis] “I have a quad G5 so there’s plenty of cpu cycles (and then some lol) when working with HDV.
The first time I edited in HDV I was blown away how well the machine handled it.”Just think what it could do with less overhead 🙂
[Borjis] “I have the decklink multibridge extreme and find capturing via component a more time consuming
process at my facility. Does DVCPRO-HD support full resolutions? I was under the impression
it didn’t (1280×720 is 960×720 etc….would rather not be doing that)”Workflow and delivery is of course the important factors so, if you are not bumping up to another format then hdv may be a good option. I still prefer the flexability of a codec that can easily move to and from any QT-savvy app – Mac or PC.
[Borjis] “as far as better than 8-bit color correction, does the color corrector not support the
32-bit float precision processing? That would be more than adequate.”It’s not bit depth, it’s color space.

It’s the same videocard as the 15″ version which Peter says performs very well in Motion.
That’s about all we know.

It really depends on your workflow and content. I find native HDV to be cumbersome, tasking the workstation by an inordinate amount. moving away from HDV into another codec takes more of the burden off of the CPU and places it on the something like the decklink or the Kona. It also enables you to work in a better colorspace.
If you are not doing a lot of finessing of your show then sure, hdv will work just fine. If you are doing a lot of processing then you are losing valuable cpu cycles and color ops by keeping it native.

[Steve Connor] “Fact is that if you’re buying a nice new XDcam HD camera, Canon H1 or JVC HD100 and you’re looking for an NLE, FCP won’t be it!”
I don’t agree with this. FCP is positioned very well to handle any of these in a professional enviorment. Editing HDV natively (Which it does do) is not a great way to handle HD anyway. If you are shooting with an H1, I would only consider the tape an aquisition need and quickly bumpit to something better on injest using a Kona or a BMD card. If you are planning on injesting directly from the camera you are not using the tool in a compatible workflow anyway.

Well, I am sure there will be some who are thrilled with it but, I think 17″ is just too big for a true portable. The FW800 port does little for me as I think eSATA is a better option now.
Now, if they offered the Quadro 2500m then…
