[AimAim] “How do the new Intel imacs do with Motion?”
Very well. Easily comparable to a dual G5 with a nice ATI X800 card.
[AimAim] “Those have the ATI Radeon X1600 card. Is that a decent card and if not, could the card in the imac be switched out?”
I think you will find the 1600 to be close to an x800 or even a little faster. However, it is unlikely that you could change it.
[AimAim] “Between the imac and the macbook pro, which one would work better with Motion and Final Cut? (assuming you put as much RAM as possible in both.)”
I would go with the MBP for two main reasons. First is that it comes standard with more video ram (256 -vs- 128 in the iMac). You can upgrade the video memory in the iMac when you order it but not after it’s been assembled.
The second reason is expansion. The MBP has a single express 34 slot that you could use to expand HD space with faster alternatives. IT’s a better long term direction than f/w.
Tha MBP is a super machine. There really is very little it can’t do except for something like incorporating a Kona or BMD hd card but, even then, it would be a great editor if you use a G5 as a capture station.

Am I missing something here? You seemed to reply to your own request with a solution like you were a seperate person. A little wierd …:S

Shouldn’t be any slowdown since the f/w bus is seperate from the sata. Should work great although I wonder if a firestore-type device would be easier to use.

As far as your specific examples, it should be more than fine. The preliminary test results of the Express 34 sata cards show that they have plenty of room for what you are talking about. The cpu power of the MBP will easily deal with DVCProHD.
Once the sata cards arrive, I expect that the MBP combined with and AJA iO would also make a very solid uncompressed setup. Pretty interesting concept I think.

Thanks. I didn’t see one on their site but, I have dropped an email to their sales people.
I just want to get an enclosure I can stick a sata drive in and put the drive in my bag and go to a client’s location. I thought it would be simple but I guess not.

Actually, I have tried that case already and besides the fact that it is rather unatractive, I found it to be somewhat of a poor build quality. Functionality-wise it is exactly what I am hoping for however.
thanks

Thanks Walter. I couldn’t find a slimline version from Granite but, I will keep looking.

Run? Yes. Run well? Not terrible (Apparently better than a PB) but it’s not stellar either.

[Joe Langenfeld] “I have a MacBook Pro 15″ dual 2 G. I can’t use FCP 5.1 because I use a lot of filters that are written in the Adobe Plug-In format, which is not yet Universal, so they don’t work. I have an AJA IO for SD I/O, but I can’t use it because it will use my only firewire port, which I need for an external disk. The 17″ will have a FW800 port, but it would be nice if someone would come up with an ExpressCard/34 FW800 or SATA card.”
There are at least two Express34 eSata cards that are in the works and will be released in the next 3-6 months.
However, keep in mind that Apple is WAY ahead of schedule on this Intel switch. The fact that people even have the MBP option is amazing to me AND the fact that the complete FCS suite is native is mind boggling to me. I experienced the PowerPC transition and it was a lot more painful than this has been so far. Honestly, once Adobe arrives with UB versions of their offerings I will consider the switch complete for me.
I think we just need to be a little patient. Most software devs are getting blind-sided by Apple’s speed in this transition and we have to give them some slack. Sure, I would love the complete AE suite along with 3rd party plugins right now for my MBP but I also understand why it’s not done.
So, I don’t really think the G5 is dead actually. A quad G5 will be very useful for a good long while yet. I do have to say I am all over the power we now have in this MPB. They just flat-out fast.

[walter biscardi] “Actually the coolest thing was a college student winning a brand new JVC HDV camera. Very very cool to see someone like that win a very nice camera.”
Wow. That’s something that I bet he will never forget. Xcellent!
